πŸŒŠπŸ”¬ Join us for the next OES Fall Seminar!

We're excited to welcome Dr. Brian Collister, Research Physical Scientist at NASA Langley Research Center and ODU Oceanography Ph.D. alumnus (2021), who will share how lidar technology is helping scientists uncover what traditional satellite observations miss in the ocean.

🌎 Filling Gaps in Our View of Upper Ocean Ecosystems Using Lidar Remote Sensing

Learn how innovative lidar measurements are providing new insights into ocean ecosystems, phytoplankton populations, and the processes that help regulate Earth's climate.

πŸŒŠπŸ”¬ Researchers in the Cutter Lab are using electrodialysis to measure dissolved organic sulfur (DOS) in seawater with funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation.

By removing salts that interfere with analysis, this method helps scientists better understand DOS compounds that influence both marine ecosystems and Earth's climate.

🌎 They now have thousands of samples from throughout the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans to analyze.

πŸŒŠπŸ”¬ Undergraduate Spotlight!

Congratulations to Alex Rhodes, an Environmental Science major at Old Dominion University, for presenting research on Paleohurricane Reconstruction from Sediment Cores in Merritt's Harbour, Newfoundland. By analyzing sediment records, this work helps uncover evidence of historic storm events and contributes to our understanding of long-term hurricane patterns.

From coastal ecology and GIS mapping to sediment core analysis, Alex continues to make meaningful contributions to environmental research and scientific discovery. πŸŒŽπŸ‘

🌟 September Undergraduate Spotlight 🌟

Meet Samantha Williamson, our September Undergraduate Spotlight! πŸŒŠπŸ”¬

Samantha's research asks an important question: Is the Chesapeake Bay browning? Using water quality data from across the Bay, Samantha investigated changes in colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and what those changes could mean for water clarity and ecosystem health.

Want to learn more? Stop by and check out Samantha's poster in person to see her findings and chat about her research!

Celebrating Dr. Margaret Mulholland's Leadership in Chesapeake Bay Science πŸŒŠπŸ”¬

Dr. Margaret Mulholland, Professor at Old Dominion University and lead investigator of the NOAA-funded MERHAB project, is helping drive a groundbreaking regional effort to monitor, forecast, and respond to harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the Chesapeake Bay. Through collaboration among universities, NOAA, MARACOOS, and state agencies, her team is advancing innovative monitoring technologies and data-sharing tools that provide earlier warnings and better protection for coastal communities, fisheries, and marine ecosystems.

The recent harmful algal bloom in the lower Chesapeake Bay demonstrated the power of this regional network, bringing together satellite imagery, water sampling, forecasting models, and real-time observations to track bloom development and support public health and environmental decision-making. Under Dr. Mulholland's leadership, this work is laying the foundation for a bay-wide monitoring and forecasting system that will strengthen resilience across the Chesapeake region.

πŸ‘ Thank you, Dr. Mulholland, for your commitment to advancing coastal science, protecting our waterways, and fostering collaboration that benefits communities throughout the Chesapeake Bay.

πŸš€πŸ”΄ OES Professor Joins European Space Agency Mars Rover Mission! πŸ”΄πŸš€

Congratulations to Dr. Nora Noffke, Professor of Paleontology in ODU's Department of Ocean and Earth Sciences, on being selected as a participating scientist for the European Space Agency's Rosalind Franklin Mars Rover mission! Dr. Noffke will work with the PanCam instrument team to help investigate the geological history of Mars and identify promising sites for subsurface sampling in the search for evidence of past life.

Dr. Noffke's expertise in ancient microbial ecosystems and fossilized biofilms found in 3.5-billion-year-old rocks from Western Australia will contribute to understanding similar environments that may have once existed on Mars.

We're excited to see OES research helping advance one of the world's most ambitious planetary exploration missions! πŸŒβž‘οΈπŸ”΄
