3 pounds of bees arrived at 757 Makerspace today. Via USPS. Because that’s a thing. ❤️ 🐝 @roadsteadmontessori students suited up with @jamie.dungan to help get our new colony settled into their hive in the community garden. Some of them were nervous walking in. By the end they were sitting on the ground next to the hive in their suits. Watching. Listening. Learning. No stings. Just 3 pounds of bees, a handful of kids, and one of those afternoons you don’t forget. The hive is home. The garden is growing. More to come. 🐝🌱

Bee-hind the scenes at 757 Makerspace. Students from @roadsteadmontessori came out to help @jamie.dungan build and paint the bee boxes for our free community makers garden in Norfolk. The colony arrives soon and the hive will go outside near our makers garden where they’ll get right to work. Fun fact: bees have been one of the only live animals the USPS has been permitted to ship for over 75 years. Your mail carrier has seen some things. This is what community looks like around here. A makerspace, a Montessori school, a garden, and a few thousand bees on their way. More on our community garden coming soon. ❤️ 🌱

Yesterday we celebrated 12 years with @roadsteadmontessori It started with an intro from a friend to meet their head of school who had an idea to start a school where students learn by making things. Twelve years later, they still come here every week. Last year we added a makers community garden at our Norfolk location. Students from Roadstead helped build it with direction from Bill and Joanna Fowler. Food, flowers, street improvement. Making it a place people want to visit. Yesterday Jameson (@jamie.dungan) taught a class on beekeeping. Students built hive boxes from scratch. Dovetail joints. Precise cuts. Assembly. Getting ready to add bees this spring. With the weather turning nice this week, we’re expanding the makers community garden. This is what 12 years of partnership, friendship and community building looks like. Students learning to build real things that matter.

MLK Jr. Day is for us always a day on, not a day off. Yesterday a group of Roadsteaders spent the morning at the City of Norfolk Government event at the historical Attucks Theater. Then they joined the march to the MLK Jr. monument. We concluded the day with a meeting with an FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent, who taught us about his duties of securing voting and other civil rights.
