Houllinia El Pangui is an intergeneric hybrid between Paphinia litensis and Houlletia odoratissima var. xanthina that was recently introduced by Ecuagenera in 2005. The pendulous flowers show inherited characteristics from both parents, resulting in a spectacular offspring. The blossom shown here measures 3 1/4 inches in size.

Bulbophyllum Wilbur Chang is a primary hybrid between Bulbophyllum echinolabium and Bulbophyllum amplebracteatum subsp. carunculatum that was introduced by H&R Orchids in 2006.

Our plant continuously blooms for many months at a time, producing striking flowers that measure over 7 inches from top to bottom. Alas, these fantastic flowers are not pleasantly fragrant and are best viewed at arms length 😉

Cattleya bicalhoi is a compact growing (about 6-7 inches tall) species that is endemic to the Brazilian states of Rio de Janiero and Minas Gerias. Its flowers are not fragrant, but are large in comparison to the plant; the blossom shown here measures a bit under 3 inches in size.

Stanhopea Bird of Prey is a primary hybrid between Stanhopea jenischiana and Stanhopea tigrina var. nigroviolacea that was introduced in 2003. Its fragrant flowers only last for a few days but our plant produces multiple spikes throughout the summer season. On one occasion we had an unexpected spike appear for us in December.

Aeranthes caudata is native to Madagascar and the Comoros Islands. Its dangling luminous green flowers, each measuring 4 inches, are pollinated by nocturnal moths. Unusually, this species is scentless and produces no detectable fragrance at night.

Dendrobium dearei is native to Borneo and the Philippines. Its flowers measure 3 inches in size, borne in large clusters on canes that may reach about 2 1/2 feet in length. We have never detected any fragrance with our plant's flowers although some sources say that they produce a musty smell. It does not require a winter dormancy and, for us, it is a non-stop, year-round, flowering machine.

Guaritonia Rosy Jewel 'Ewa' is an award-winning cultivar of a primary hybrid between Guarianthe bowringiana and Broughtonia sanguinea that was registered in 1956. Its vibrantly colored and lightly fragrant 2 inch flowers are held in tight clusters, with as many as 10 in a cluster having been recorded.

Habenaria erichmichelii 'Cardinal's Roost'.

Habenaria erichmichelii is native from Assam to Vietnam and south into Malaysia. It is closely related to Habenaria rhodocheila and has been determined by some botanists to be Habenaria rhodocheila var. rhodocheila. For now, we have decided to retain this as a separate species - one of the most obvious differences that sets this apart from its cousin, other than some minor taxonomic details, is that it is fragrant at night while the other produces no fragrance at all. Addiitionally, it only flowers in shades of pink while the other species appears in pink, red, orange and yellow varieties.

Shown here is a nice batch of multiple pots coming into flower.

Cochleanthes aromatica is native to Costa Rica and Panama. The flower shown here measures 4 inches in size. Its specific epithet is most appropriate as it is richly fragrant.
We succesfully grow ours (along with closely related Warscewiczella species) with the pot sitting in a shallow saucer of water.

Dendrobium acinaciforme is native from the eastern Himalayas, west though southern China into Vietnam. It is also found in parts of Malaysia and the Moluccan Islands. Its flowers are tiny, measuring less than 1/4 inch. The lip has an interesting "pie crust" crinkle texture. These flowers are borne on a pendent plant with thick succulent leaves that form a zig zag pattern.
