Question of the Week πŸ΄β“

What's one question you asked this week that helped you figure something out?

Here's mine: I had a horse that was lame and I couldn't tell why. So I reached out to someone I trust and asked, "Why do you think this horse is lame?" That one question got me further than guessing ever would.

At Continue Restoration, I believe curiosity is the antidote to frustration. Asking for help isn't giving up, it's the first step. Kids, parents, and fellow horse people, comment your answer below! I'll share a few of my favorites at the end of the week.

Why we make kids lope before they ever touch a saddle.

It's not a rule for fun. Riding ba****ck first forces your body to find balance the honest way, no stirrups to cheat with, no saddle horn to grab. By the time a student earns that saddle, they already know how to move with the horse. The saddle becomes a tool, not a crutch. That's the whole idea.

Trail ride day and someone is NOT having it

The horse knows before you do. One ear back, one ear forward, moving a little too bold out of the gate. That's your cue. Not every trail ride starts smooth and that's kind of the point. You figure it out together. Sometimes the horse wins that first mile. Usually you win the rest of it.

🐴 Introducing: Question of the Week!

Each week I'll be posting a question for my students to think about between lessons. It's a little something to get them observing, reflecting, and growing as horsemen and horsewomen even when they're not in the saddle.

This week's question:

"What is one thing your horse does to tell you it's happy or relaxed?"

Pay attention during your next ride or visit. Horses are always communicating, we just have to learn to listen. Save your answer for your next lesson or drop it in the comments!

She walked in terrified. She left asking when she could come back.

That shift doesn't happen because it was easy. It happens because we let it be hard, and stayed right there with her through it. That's the Rugged Truth. More than a lesson. A continuation.

🌟 Student of the Month: Addilyn Schulzkump

Addilyn had a confidence-packed month at Continue Restoration. She hit her first lope on CeCe this September, a huge milestone, and earned the option to ride in a saddle.

But here's what makes her story special: she chose to stay ba****ck.

She tried the saddle once and decided it just wasn't her thing right now. She knows what she feels and she trusts herself enough to say it. That's exactly the kind of quiet confidence I'm building out here.

Addilyn, I am so proud of you. Keep trusting your gut and your horse. 🐴

Why I stopped the lesson to talk about a bee sting.

If I ask you to stop your horse and you keep going, it's not just about being stubborn. It could be about bees. Or a hole in the ground. Or another horse spooking. Listening in the arena isn't a rule for rules' sake. It's a skill that keeps you safe and builds trust with your horse. That's what we're really teaching here.

He's usually the chaos horse. Not today.

Teq has a reputation. Ask anyone who's ridden him. But this week he was cool, calm, and collected when it mattered most. Horses will surprise you every single time you think you've got them figured out.

Tried to nudge the horse next to me to pick up the pace. She disagreed. Strongly. 🦡

Got kicked. Kept riding.

Look, sometimes you make a dumb call and the horse lets you know. That's fair. It's not their fault I thought that was a good idea.

Getting hurt doesn't mean you get off. It doesn't mean the horse is bad. It means you're doing a real job with real animals and sometimes it goes sideways.

You shake it off, you keep going, and you don't blame the horse for your own stupid move. πŸ˜‚

That's just part of it. 🐴
