September is Attendance Awareness Month! It offers a chance to focus on chronic absence and the practical steps schools can take to address it.

The Virginia Career and Learning Center’s four-module Chronic Absenteeism series guides school teams through those steps. Educators learn to recognize the causes of chronic absence, interpret attendance data, and build a practical plan for improvement.

The CLC is a CIEES Special Projects collaboration with the Virginia Department of Education’s Office of Behavioral Health and Student Safety.

Dear Lost in Navigation, Bold text may look like a heading, but visual formatting alone doesn't give it structure. Proper heading styles help people using screen readers understand how a document is organized and move from section to section. Select each heading, apply Heading 1, Heading 2, or Heading 3 from Home > Styles, then open View > Navigation Pane to check that your headings appear in a logical order.

The Community Schools Impact Report gathers stories from divisions across Virginia. York County illustrates how students attend more consistently when they feel they belong.

Across its three schools, the division has built programming to strengthen that connection. Students at Yorktown Middle earn a student-versus-staff dodgeball game through their attendance, behavior, and grades, and Queens Lake Middle drew 150 to 200 students to its first after-school club meeting. York County is working toward a 10% increase in attendance and a 5% increase in family engagement by the end of the grant period.

Special Projects collaborated with the Virginia Department of Education's Office of Behavioral Health and Student Safety to bring each division's story to life.

A recent Old Dominion University feature caught our attention with the story of Tess Pleban, a doctoral student in adaptive special education mentored by CIEES's Executive Director, Dr. Jonna Bobzien.

Tess teaches from a belief that students reach their goals in many different ways, and that independence grows from small, steady gains. She saw that same idea in motion this year when she traveled to Cortina, Italy, to watch her brother, Joe Pleban, compete in Para snowboarding at the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games after years of training and recovery.

Her graduate work with Dr. Bobzien continues that focus, advocating for adaptive programming that meets students wherever they are.

This Literacy Month, we’re highlighting the work of TTAC ODU Educational Specialists for Literacy, Erin Saxon and Danielle Kreassig, EdD, as they promote new resources available through the TTAC ODU Lending Library.

The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) has opened its Request for Applications for the School-Based Mental Health Services Grant.

The competitive grant opportunity supports school divisions seeking to partner with mental health providers to provide services to their school communities, including students, family members and caregivers, and staff.

Potential applicants are encouraged to participate in the pre-application call on September 2 at 10:00 AM. While participation is not required to apply, the call can provide helpful information for interested school divisions.

The RFA closes September 17, 2026.

At CIEES, every learning experience begins with the learner.

The most important questions we ask before writing a storyboard or opening a slide deck focus on the real people who will engage with the content and use it in their work: What terminology is most familiar to them?

How do their responsibilities shape the way they will apply the content? Which situations do they encounter often enough to reflect in scenarios and practice activities?

What barriers commonly prevent successful application? The answers shape the design from the start.

In May, members of the CIEES Evaluation Team attended the Eastern Evaluation Research Society Annual Conference. This year’s theme, Transforming Evaluation Through Vision and Values, invited evaluators to consider how their work can support learning, improvement, and meaningful change, with sessions spanning stakeholder engagement, evaluation capacity building, systems transformation, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

For the CIEES Evaluation Team, opportunities like EERS provide valuable space to learn from colleagues, exchange ideas, and stay current with developments in the field. These experiences help us continue to strengthen our work and support our partners through high-quality evaluation, research, and continuous improvement efforts.
