With a heavy heart, we are grieving the loss of a member of our survivor community, Tina Turner.

In addition to her entertainment work, Tina was a dedicated philanthropist who supported survivors. In 2020, TINA—The Tina Turner Musical dedicated proceeds to benefit RAINN to ensure survivors have access to the support they deserve. The musical told the story of Tina Turner’s triumphs despite her experience of intimate partner violence. Tina touched so many and we are forever grateful for the legacy she left in our community.

You have the final decision on what you do with your body. Partners who use manipulation, guilt, or threats to pressure or force you into having s*x or engaging in s*xual acts when you don’t want to are committing s*xual assault. Real love is protective. Truly loving partners respect your boundaries. R**e and other types of s*xual violence occur in about half of relationships that contain mental, emotional, and physical abusive.

Trust and respectful communication are fundamental to a healthy relationship that is built on love, respect, and equality. If you are constantly having to prove that you’re not doing something wrong, you are not in a balanced, healthy relationship. An abusive partner will often use jealousy to justify exerting control over where you go, whom you talk to, and how you interact with others. You don’t have to share access to all parts of your life to prove that you’re trustworthy. Trust is not built through surveillance. It is established through respect.

Abuse takes many forms, including manipulation and coercion. Abusive partners may pressure you to cut ties with people you care about, especially when those people may give you feedback that the relationship isn’t good for you. Isolation from friends and family can happen slowly over time, when an abusive partner creates conflicts whenever you spend time with others. The partner may unfairly put you in the position of having to “choose” between the relationship and your support system.
