Old Dominion Chapter Society of Government Meeting Professionals

SGMP's mission is to enhance and promote the expertise of government meeting professionals. Membership has grown to over 100 members.

Old Dominion Chapter

The Old Dominion Chapter was chartered on December 10, 1987, in Williamsburg, Va. Carl Thompson represented the SGMP National Board and presided over the official ceremonies. The chapter has been active offering a variety of professional growth and meeting industry educational programs over the years, as well as opportunities for networking between suppliers and planners. The

chapter is proud of the sense of family that its members have toward one another. Retreats are held yearly to plan activities for the coming year, and all elected officers and committee chairs attend. A strategic plan has been developed to enable the chapter to focus on priorities, and the members have been successful in implementing the plan. Meetings are held mostly in Richmond, but the chapter meetings travel to other locations in Virginia at least once a year. Fundraising activities include silent auctions, raffles, and bake sales. The chapter has held joint educational workshops and conferences with the VA Chapter of MPI, and with VSAE. The chapter has hosted two National Board meetings, one in Virginia Beach and one in Williamsburg. The National Board, SGMP Education Foundation Board, the Chapter Presidents' Roundtable, and 2nd Vice Presidents' Roundtable met in Norfolk in November 2001. Chapter members have been active on the national level with the Education Foundation and in other positions. Harriett Edmunds served one term as the CPR chair and one term as CPR recorder. Supplier Charles Sadler was appointed to fill an unexpired term on the SGMP National Board, and then in 2000, was elected to serve another two-year term. The Old Dominion Chapter has won many national SGMP awards, including membership awards, Communications of the Year awards, and Program of the Year awards. The chapter supports philanthropic causes annually. Some charities have included Central VA Food Bank, Central VA Public Television, American Red Cross, Cancer Society, Heart Association, the SGMP Education Foundation, as well as supporting individual families and students in need. The following persons have served the chapter well as president: Ron Montgomery, Doug Cooke, Patti Worley, Harriett Edmunds, William Whitesides, Virginia McGee, and Gloria Colvin.
