Assistant Professor of Criminology and/or Sociology (Tenure Track, F0947A)

The Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice at Old Dominion University invites applicants for a 10-month tenure track Assistant Professor position beginning Fall 2025. We are seeking a criminologist or sociologist to teach undergraduate and graduate courses (on campus and online) whose research addresses inequality, public policy, and social justice in the criminal justice system and its responses to crime and victimization; and/or those whose work explores the nexus of public health and criminal justice.

The successful candidate will teach existing courses in our undergraduate programs in Criminal Justice and Sociology, including research methods and a capstone research course, as well as contribute to our Ph.D. program in Criminology & Criminal Justice. Our Ph.D. in Criminology & Criminal Justice is a sociological criminology program that highlights social inequality and public policy in the study of crime and justice issues. The position carries a 3-3 teaching load consistent within other departments in the College of Arts & Letters, though there are opportunities for reduction.

Opportunities exist for the selected candidate to participate in ODU’s Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, School of Cybersecurity, and School of Public Health. The surrounding 14 localities and their criminal justice and social service agencies also offer tremendous opportunities for research and community engagement partnerships.

The Department has an accomplished, collaborative, and diverse faculty and student body committed to equality, social justice, and transformative policies and practices and the successful candidate will enrich this environment.

Interested candidates must apply at https://jobs.odu.edu/postings/21128.

Applications must be submitted by October 14, 2024 for full consideration. The position will remain open until it is filled. Inquiries should be directed to Dr. Jared Ellison at [email protected].

Join Dr. Mica Deckard (Soc. & CJ) as they play the harmonium and lead the crowd in a small set of traditional yogic chants from North India.

Bhakti Yoga Kirtan, or devotional call and response chanting was invented as a pathway to meditation in the modern world's chaotic atmosphere.

The science of sound and singing are clear: creating sound releases serotonin, improves mood, blood flow, and circulation and can even help us live longer!

This donation-based event is FREE and open to the public. No ticket required!

All donations support Virginia Community Yoga, a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing accessible yoga to undeserved and marginalized communities. Our current bridge projects offer a 12-week living yoga class to incarcerated neighbors in the Norfolk City Jail, and a brand new veterans' program that will be announced soon!
