For better math results, encourage reading
Many teens don't make the most of their math assignments. They see their math textbook only as a place to find the problems they are assigned. But a math book is also a resource for understanding the "why" of a math method. Encourage your teen to get into the habit of reading the explanations and solving sample problems in the book before starting to solve the assigned problems.

Daily Tips for Families Math is a subject that builds on itself. Each new concept involves material that came before. That's why it's so important for teens to do math regularly. Falling behind makes it harder for students to learn each new lesson.

Promote learning by doing it together
You don't have to be an expert in academic subjects to help your student learn. Lots of activities you can do together at home promote learning. You might pick two news editorials that express opposing viewpoints on the same issue and share them with your teen. After reading them, ask for your teen's suggestions about how the issue should be handled. Or, have your teen pick a new recipe and cook it together. You might also help your student feel a personal connection to history by talking with older relatives to learn their stories.

Daily Tips for Families Focusing on academic subjects is not the only way to help your student learn. Fill your teen's time with all kinds of learning, especially things you can do together.
