Past students love choosing their own musher & dog team, and cheering for them during the *live* race events. Class runs from mid-Feb through mid-March and includes one optional LIVE class at the end where we present certificates and celebrate the end of the race.

This 5-week FLEX class is taught through asynchronous lessons, and is great for homeschool or extracurricular learning. It is a cross-curricular course, where students enjoy learning more about Alaska geography, history, and the tradition of dog sled mushing - all while enjoying the action of a live sports event. This 5-week unit includes:
🌎 History of the Iditarod
📚 Reading competition where learners move their avatar along the Iditarod trail each time they reach a reading goal
🧪 Math & STEM activities, for example learners discover just how much dog food is needed, how & why nutrition helps these dog athletes perform (plus more lessons)

This has been my classroom this week! I'm in Nome, Alaska at the finish line of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. 1,000 miles across the frozen tundra of Alaska. All my lessons this week are outside! It's cold 🥶

This is one of the most unique class I teach, and I have a big group of learners this year who have been enjoying learning more about Alaska geography, history, and the tradition of dog sled mushing - along with several academic activities.

A long time teacher friend of mine came along for the adventure! She has lived in Alaska even longer than I have. Being at the finish line of the Iditarod is a dream come true for both of us. She has also been my amazing videographer this week, and is having so much fun helping me bring the race to kids around the world.

This year I'll be at the START and FINISH lines of this incredible 1,000 mile race across the frozen tundra of Alaska and I'll give your child a front row seat to all the dog-barking and enthusiastic race action. NOVEMBER 2022 Monthly Update:
This month is spring in Antarctica! I especially love teaching my Outschool classes at this time of year because the live web-cams are back up, and students especially love seeing penguins in their natural habitat. In my class ONLY Penguins! we check the live web-cams, and students love counting penguins and watching them build their nests (yes, there are fights over nest-building rocks). I've added more class times to my schedule, feel free to also request a time.

The week of Nov 6th, I’ll also be starting the last 5-week series of 2022 for my class Amazing Antarctica (live class) or Antarctica is Awesome (flex class). We also check the live penguin-cams in this class during our Animals Week. This is the geography class that is missing from most curriculum. Antarctica is a special and unique continent, and I love sharing it with students and answering all their curious questions.

Antarctic Penguins and Dinosaurs in Mexico!

I teach these classes online as well, and it's an extra-special time of year because penguins are arriving an Antarctica. Students get to see them in their natural habitat via live we**am and count how many are making nests. Click the link below to register your student for classes. 🐧

It was extra special day to be at school because it was also Dia de los Mu***os in Mexico. A kind parent painted my face, many students were in costume, and each classroom created an altar to a recently-deceased loved one. Her class honored Modesto, a giraffe who passed away this last year and was a beloved local hero.
