This post has been very difficult to write and, as such, is overdue. Unfortunately, McCoy was not able to overcome his surgical complications and we had to let him go a little over a week ago. His decline was not at all what we or his vets expected - statistically, he should have recovered. But the infection in his incision caused too much damage, and we essentially reached a point where we'd run out of reasonable options for treatment as his issues compounded on one another.
Though McCoy was only here at ECC a little while, this loss echoes loudly. Grief doesn't follow a timeline, as they say, and it does not take long for these animals to have big impacts on our hearts.
We are so grateful for all who offered kind words, support, and to those who donated to help cover this large, unexpected expense. The medical bill stands even when the patient does not recover, which makes things feel even heavier in these circumstances. We hope to create an emergency medical fund through the sanctuary in McCoy's memory in the future.
