In 1991, a medical congress was being held at the Cagliari trade fair in Italy. During the event, immunologist Dr. Fernando Aiuti made a dramatic public gesture that would become an important moment in the fight against HIV/AIDS stigma.

Aiuti was the founder of the ANLAIDS Association, Italy’s leading AIDS advocacy organization. At the time, there was still a lot of fear and misinformation about HIV. People were unsure about how the virus could spread, including whether it could be passed through oral contact.

In front of people at the event, Aiuti suddenly kissed Rosaria Iardino, an HIV-positive woman, on the mouth. His goal was to show the public that people living with HIV should not be feared or treated differently because of the virus.

The powerful moment became a landmark symbol in Italy’s HIV/AIDS awareness efforts. It happened during a time when widespread panic and misinformation had created serious stigma around people living with HIV.

Medical science has since consistently confirmed that HIV is not transmitted through kissing. The virus is not present in meaningful concentrations in saliva. HIV transmission requires exposure to certain body fluids, including blood, semen, vaginal fluids, or breast milk.

Aiuti continued working in immunology and public health advocacy for many years. He remained involved in efforts to educate people and challenge the fear surrounding HIV.

He passed away in 2019, but the public gesture he made decades earlier remains remembered as a powerful example of using a public moment to challenge misinformation and reduce stigma surrounding people living with HIV.
