There are some things that just make us dance people.

We look at every empty building we pass and immediately think, “Hmmm… would that make a good dance studio?”

We only really need to know how to count to eight. Then we just start over.

We choreograph in the car and create some of our greatest masterpieces while driving. The only problem is remembering them when we actually get to the studio.

We hear a new song and, before we even know all the words, we are already counting it.

We critique every opening number on every awards show because apparently we just can’t watch anything like normal people.

“One more time” has never actually meant one more time.

We can make a costume out of almost anything. Fabric, rhinestones, safety pins, a hot glue gun… we’ll figure it out.

We have marked choreography in kitchens, grocery store aisles, parking lots, hotel rooms, and probably a few other places where people wondered what we were doing.

And we call them our kids.

Not our students. Not somebody else’s children.

Our kids.

Because for the hours, months, and years they are with us, that is exactly how we feel about them.

Yep. We are dance people.

A little crazy. A little obsessed. And pretty lucky to get to call this our life. ❤️

The studio lobby is a classroom too. Children are learning before they ever step into class.
They are listening.
They are watching.
They are taking it all in.
They hear how adults talk about the teacher.
They hear how adults talk about the child who got the solo, the spot, the part, or the opportunity.
They hear how we respond when something does not go our way. This is especially true when they hear the older dancers.
They hear whether we celebrate other children or compare them.
They hear whether we respect the journey or only talk about the results.And whether we realize it or not, they are learning from all of it.

A dance studio is not only built by the classes we teach. It is built by the culture we create in the hallways, the dressing rooms, the parking lot, and yes, the lobby.

Because children are always learning. They learn kindness when they hear kindness.They learn respect when they see respect.They learn confidence when the adults around them make every child feel like they belong.

A dance studio can teach so much more than steps. It can teach character. It can teach community. It can teach children how to cheer for someone else and still believe in themselves.
And maybe that is one of the greatest parts of the journey.
Not just becoming a better dancer, but becoming a better human being along the way.
