🇺🇸 USA 250 Student Spotlights! 🇺🇸

This year marks an incredible milestone — the 250th birthday of the United States of America! We want to celebrate that together in the pages of the August issue of The Utah Homeschooler, and that means we need YOUR students!

If your student has done anything to celebrate USA 250 this summer, we'd love to feature them. That could look like:

- Marching in a parade
- Performing in a patriotic play, concert, or program
- Visiting a historical site or national park
- Reading about American history or a Founding Father
- Making a patriotic craft or art project
- Cooking a historical recipe
- Memorizing the Preamble, the Declaration, or another founding document
- Writing a poem, song, or story about America
- Memorizing or performing the national anthem
- Attending a citizenship ceremony or historical presentation
- Doing a family project or unit study about American history
- Volunteering in their community
- Anything else that made them feel proud to be an American!

To submit a spotlight, send us a short write-up from your student (in their own words!) about what they did and what it meant to them, plus a few photos, including at least one that shows their face. You can send it to [email protected]. Submissions are rolling, so send them in as soon as you can!

Calling all homeschool writers: adults AND teens! 🇺🇸

The August issue of The Utah Homeschooler is going to be something special—a celebration of USA 250 and the incredible freedoms that allow us to homeschool with such liberty and intention.

I'm looking for contributors to write personal essays for the issue. Here are some ideas to get you started, but feel free to come up with your own idea:

Historical (American) — What did the Founding Fathers say about education and raising citizens? What can we learn from them and apply in our homeschools today?

Historical (Utah) — Utah has a rich history of pioneer settlers who sacrificed enormously for the freedom to live and raise their families according to their own values. How does that legacy of sacrifice and conviction connect to why we homeschool today?

Civic — How do we raise children who genuinely love and value this country and its freedoms, not out of blind patriotism, but out of real understanding? What does that look like in your home?

Practical — Specific ideas, resources, and approaches for teaching American history, civics, and the value of freedom in a way that actually sticks.

Whatever topic you choose, the goal is the same: to celebrate, inspire, encourage, and support, and to leave readers with something they can actually use in their homeschool.

Essays should be 500-2000 words, written in your own voice.

Interested? Send an email to [email protected]. Please reach out by July 10 and tell me your article ideas so we don't duplicate topics. Final essays are due July 22.

The May Issue of the The Utah Homeschooler magazine is here! This is the last issue for the 2025-2026 school year. Here's a quick sneak peak at what's inside:

- Meet the Code Crusaders, a homeschool LEGO robotics team from Draper, Utah, who made it all the way to the world competition in Houston, Texas (p. 4)!

- Jennifer Horne shares her struggles and wins from twenty-five years of homeschooling in a neurodivergent household (p. 12), and her son shares how he won a sports scholarship to college while continuing to homeschool through high school (p. 18).

- In “The Heart of It” column, Janet Summit and Aneladee Milne use Little Men to teach about the power of connecting with our children before correcting them (p. 22).

Then check out this issue's writing contest winners!

The prompt was: "The Secret History of Everyday Things", and your young writers delivered beautifully! Students will learn fascinating tidbits while sampling essays written by their homeschooling peers. They might even be inspired to write an essay of their own. Or better yet, to enter our next writing contest!

I loved talking with Krista Whitney for her article in the January 2026 issue. Her words of encouragement reminded me that even when everything about homeschool is going wrong and I feel like I'm utterly falling short, meaningful growth is still happening beneath the surface—for my kids and for me.
