This little star is with us for the second year and is blossoming into a reader before our eyes. Notice what he says about halfway through… parents, these milestones and victories are what they want you to notice and love. He KNOWS how proud his mom and dad will be when they see him building words. Of course I’m going to show them!

We know our kids have been in school all day by the time they get to us. We make the learning fun by using hands on, creative or game-based activities that strengthen the skills they need. Here she is practicing counting sets, with fine motor coordination practice mixed in. But to her, it’s just sprinkling the cupcake!

The “work” is all ready! Thank you to our teachers, who put so much time into developing activities that are appropriate and valuable. And the hardest part - making sure they’re fun, so the kids don’t even realize they’re learning!

It’s no accident that these are the letters we’re focusing on with our Kindergarteners this week. Part of what makes our program such a success is the relationship we have with our kids’ classroom teachers in the Niagara Falls City Schools. The teachers tell us exactly what they’re covering from day to day so that we can most effectively support their learning at Francis Center after school. They also tell us the specific needs of the children so that we can plan lessons and activities for each child that will benefit them. We’re very grateful for this collaboration.

It was my privilege to have been asked to present the prestigious Perboyre Award to Francis Center teacher and friend Mateo Gruosso at Niagara University last night. He earned this with his exceptional work ethic, relentless service to others, his concern for the poor and his impact on the global community. I could not be prouder to have watched him grow into the man and teacher he is today. Congratulations Mateo, and thank you for sharing yourself with our children at Francis Center.
