2025 was a year of preservation in motion.

From quiet mornings and prayers for peace abroad, to global convenings in Nepal and Paris, to deep community work closer to home — this year asked us to think differently about what it means to steward history with people, not just places.

Along the way, we celebrated milestones like:
– Research recognized at the national level
– A decade of HOPE Crew and the next generation of preservationists
– New conversations through Tangible Remnants
– A new home at the Cambridge Innovation Center
– The launch of Little M, an intergenerational storytelling initiative
– And moments of reflection outdoors that reminded me why heritage lives far beyond walls

As we look ahead to 2026, I’m grateful for the partners, communities, collaborators, and co-conspirators who trust us with their stories — and excited about what we’re building next.

In 2022, I received the Women in Architecture Award from the Architectural Foundation—becoming the first preservationist to do so. At the time, I was in the middle of my fellowship at the American Academy in Rome and flew back to the U.S. to accept the award. As I prepared to give my remarks as one of the keynote speakers, I took a leap of faith and chose to speak about the importance of preserving landscapes of enjoyment by referencing P-Valley and the cultural legacy of juke joints.

If you know the show P-Valley, it centers on a gentleman’s club in the fictional town of Chucalissa, Mississippi. I drew from a scene where Uncle Clifford talks about inheriting the club from his mother, who inherited it from her grandfather. Three generations of entrepreneurship in the Mississippi Delta...worthy of celebration, respectability politics be damned.

When I watched the episode Sinners, I was reminded once again of the freedom that still exists in these spaces and the importance of protecting places where love and joy are possible.

Easter has long symbolized hope, renewal, and the enduring spirit of humanity. As a preservationist, I see these themes reflected not only in sacred traditions—but also in the places, stories, and communities we fight to protect.

Each act of preservation is a kind of reappearance of light—a way to honor what came before while making space for what’s to come. The survival of soul, culture, and memory is woven into the work of caring for our shared history.

Alexander Dumas, author of The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers, was the grandson of an enslaved Haitian woman and the son of a revolutionary general.

His legacy is a powerful reminder that Black excellence has always been a part of global literary history.
