Founded in 1948 by Newtown Friends Meeting and still under its care, NFS is an independent institution guided by the core values of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). The Friends’ belief that “there is that of God in everyone” leads to key aspects of a Newtown Friends education, both followed and taught: the creative and nonviolent resolution of conflict, the prevalence of silence as a means to listen for an inner truth, and the fostering of respect, concern, and responsibility for the well-being of self and others.

We were so excited to welcome our students and their families into our classrooms for Meet the Teachers!

It was wonderful to see familiar faces, make new connections, and share in the excitement as everyone prepared for the start of a new school year. Our classrooms are ready, our teachers are eager, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back for the first day of school on Monday!

Laura Durst joins Newtown Friends School as our new part-time 1st Grade Associate! She earned her degree in Elementary Education from the University of Vermont, with minors in World History and World Religions, and brings 13 years of experience teaching students in grades K–6. Laura is excited to become part of the NFS community and support our youngest learners as they grow and thrive. As a transplant to Pennsylvania from Kentucky, she is most excited to immerse herself in the community and to learn from the staff, students, and parents what it truly means to be part of Newtown Friends School. David Young joins Newtown Friends School as our new Upper School Learning Specialist! He earned a bachelor's degree in History from The College of Wooster and a master's degree in School Counseling from Rider University. With more than 30 years of experience supporting students with learning differences and organizational challenges, Dave brings a wealth of knowledge and care to our community. Dave is also the parent of three NFS alums! You can find Dave in the early mornings walking Stella-the-wonder-dog around George School. Welcome, Dave!

Bethany Schwendy joins Newtown Friends School as our new PreK–8 Music Teacher! She earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Messiah University and brings 18 years of teaching experience. Bethany is excited to help our students discover the joy of music through singing, rhythm, and play. When not at school, Bethany enjoys time with her family playing card games, reading in cozy spaces, and admiring the family cat, Eliza. Welcome, Bethany!

We were so excited to welcome our teachers back to school!

After time apart this summer, it was a joy to gather together, share a simple meal, catch up, and enjoy one another’s company as we get ready for another wonderful school year.

A special thank-you to our **grill master, Tom**, for keeping everyone well-fed! And a huge shoutout to **Facilities Supervisor Mike** for all of his hard work getting the school ready for everyone’s arrival next week. We’re so grateful for all that you do to help make our school feel ready, welcoming, and cared for.

Andrew Frechette joins NFS as our new Director of the Innovation Center! He earned degrees in Social Studies Education and Journalism from Western Kentucky University and brings more than 12 years of experience in independent schools, with a focus on early childhood education and technology. Andrew is excited to help students and teachers use technology as a source of innovation, creativity, and inspiration. He's a consummate nerd, so please talk to him about your favorite nerdy books, games, and movies. Welcome, Andrew!

Welcome to our newest faculty members! We're excited to introduce the talented educators joining the Newtown Friends School community this year.

Cynthia Voorhees joins us as our new Lower School Spanish teacher! She earned a bachelor's degree in Spanish from Hope College and a master's in Language Teaching from the School for International Training. With 28 years of teaching experience in Spanish and ESL, she is excited to inspire our youngest learners. ¡Bienvenida, Cynthia!
