Montessori Community School of Newtown was founded in 2010 as a licensed toddler, preschool, and kin

Montessori Community School of Newtown was founded in 2010 as a licensed toddler, preschool and kindergarten program. We are dedicated to preserving, promoting and practicing the educational philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, founder of the method. Each class is guided by a Montessori-trained directress and an assistant.

Montessori's goals for peace are twofold: to cultivate inner peace in children and to equip them with the skills and respect needed for global peace. This is achieved through fostering respect, empathy, and cooperation from a young age, which includes practicing self-control and conflict resolution in the classroom and extending this understanding to the interconnectedness of the world. The aim is to raise individuals who are internally calm and socially responsible, capable of contributing to a more peaceful society and world.

The importance of community has been an essential component of Montessori education since its earliest days. Maria Montessori called her early childhood classrooms 'Children's Houses', being a place where children belonged and felt comfortable, and a place where they were responsible.

Montessori extends far beyond the classroom. The approach to learning reaches into homes, families, communities, and the world at large. Montessori is for an education for life.

Montessori learners recognize themselves as part of multiple communities—the community of the classroom, the community of the family, and the community of the wider world.

“I have seen that children can do much for the community.”
Maria Montessori

Summer is an amazing time for a child! Our MCSN summer camp program offered our students a fun, safe and engaging environment where they formed new friendships and found a sense of belonging and accomplishment. With the inclusion of educational activities, parents can feel confident knowing their child was learning every day, all while having a great time.

Montessori education is about the liberation of the child: to be given ownership, independence and respect — and to have the best possible environment to enable optimal development. At MCSN, we honor Maria Montessori during last week’s celebration of Montessori Week and today, March 8, on International Women's Day, a day that pays tribute to equality and Montessori which go hand in hand.

“An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking: it involves the spiritual development of man, the enhancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to understand the times in which they live.” -Maria Montessori

Gardening with young children provides the perfect combination of skills and tasks to address a child’s development. Working in a garden is a great physical development activity developed as children move from one place to the other carrying tools, soil and water. They are moving their bodies using large muscles and fine motor skills are employed in gardening when children use a trowel or rake and pick up tiny seeds to plant. Literacy skills can be part of gardening, too as children learn the names of different plants, tools and garden tasks.

In addition, children learn a lifelong love of growing things!
