It is both heartbreaking and crushing to watch this mama talk about the drowning of her toddler, and all of the things she is begging people to hear and understand 😭
Drowning is not something that only happens to other people. It is an accident that can happen to ANY of us, especially those without an effective water safety strategy. An effective strategy = Supervision, Barriers, Alarms, SKILLS, and CPR. One layer can fail. Two are less likely to fail, and so on and so on. The more you have the better.
And lastly, a hard truth: don’t check off the skills box if you’re in sh*tty ineffective lessons where your child isn’t independently performing skills in a matter of weeks. You are wasting time and giving yourself a false sense of security, because if they’re not getting their face wet or floating without support in a lesson, they’re not going to magically do that in an emergency.
We are booked for summer but have 16 slots left in the fall, a number of which are in the prime time of 8-9a. Accept that something as awful as drowning is a real possibility, and then ruthlessly make sure you are doing every single thing you can to prevent it.
