Betty June Silconas Poetry Center The BJS Poetry Center at Sussex County Community College promotes the work of poets in Sussex County, NJ, and beyond. Ms. Silconas never sought to be recognized.

The Betty June Silconas Poetry Center at Sussex County Community College honors the memory of Betty June Silconas, a Sparta, New Jersey, resident who celebrated her life in her poems. The joy and love she had for family, friends, and her home are evident in her work. She wrote for the bliss she experienced as she chronicled the events in her life: seasons, celebrations, and her spirituality. With a generous donation from the Silconas family, the Poetry Center was established in 2005. Our readings, workshops, and The Stillwater Review provide a place for writers both in our community and across the country to share their work, their support, their love of poetry.

Greetings from The Stillwater Review!

We will be accepting poetry submissions for vol. 17 of The Stillwater Review from September 1st, 2026 (12:00 am) – December 1st, 2026 (11:59 pm). Poets can submit their work through our Submittable website (link below). Please read our submission guidelines in full before submitting. Note that we are limiting submissions to three poems; if you submit more than three poems, only the first three will be read and considered.

A memory from June 14, 2014...Could this have been the very first Silconas Poetry Festival? If not the first, then the second; if my memory is correct, we had the first two in the SCCC Art Gallery and then we moved to the PAC/A Building because we realized we needed more room!

Please join the editors of The Stillwater Review for our annual Editors’ Reading on Thursday, May 7, 2026.

The reading will take place on the Sussex County Community College Campus in the Student Center Theater (Bldg. D) at 5:00 pm, followed by an open mic for poetry. SCCC is located at 1 College Hill Road, Newton, NJ.

Readers include Editor Daniel Warhol, Associate Editors Jane Ebihara, D. Scott Humphries, Elaine Koplow, and Olivia Masucci, and former Associate Editor Jean LeBlanc.

Light refreshment will be served after the reading. We look forward to seeing you there!
