Good afternoon Discovery family! I hope that everyone is having a wonderful weekend. Below are the announcements for this week.
I hope that everyone had as much fun at Park Day on Friday as I did! I thoroughly enjoyed all of you interacting with one another no matter what your grade is. We truly are a family!
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday is Enrichment, Thursday is Community.
There is no school on Friday due to a Teacher Workday.
Please see the following from Ms. Ward regarding grading procedures for her classes: "As I teach mastery learning, I only grade the final project at the end of a Spanish unit. Year long Spanish units are 4 weeks long. Semester long Spanish units are 2 weeks long. The project they turn in is a rough draft. That is the due date listed on Canvas. Presentations given are not a rough draft and must be given when called upon in class. When the student turns in their project to me, I will suggest corrections. They will correct the project and I will grade it after the corrections are made. After all of that, grades are entered into Canvas and then shared with Infinite Campus. This process generally takes about a week to complete. So on average grades are entered into Canvas a week after the assignment is due. I do check the notes and assignments as the unit goes along for understanding, but that is not entered as a grade. There are also quarter long assignments of Duolingo and Culture Points. They complete them on their own time and I check in with them every so often. A grade is not recorded for those until the end of the quarter.
In English, the length of the essay, speech, or presentation determines the length of the unit. Those due dates for the whole class are on Canvas at the beginning of every class. The work turned in is again a rough draft that I give corrections for. Some corrections take longer than others based on the length of the essay. Sometimes corrections I give and corrections they perform will take longer than a week. So for English, 2 weeks after the due date might be a better estimate. Again, grades are not recorded until after corrections."
Most of our teachers grade based on mastery learning. I would encourage you to reach out to your child's teacher(s) should you have specific questions regarding the grades in each class.
We will be participating in the Castle of Cans Fundraiser 9/28-10/2. There will be more information coming in regards to this event.
