"Becas Don Ross" on the banner above refers to a College Scholarship program funded by our Newton-based Treasurer, Don Ross. Berlin Rodriguez, who is studying to be a doctor, is one such Beca recipient. When she was a student at the Free High School for adults, Berlin rose before dawn, rode a horse for an hour to the nearest paved road, caught the free bus supplied by the FHS, and arrived at the campus near San Juan by 7:30, ready to do a week's worth of academic work in one intense day. A farm-family's daughter, with her eyes on the prize.

7 November 2024: Delighted to report that the City of Newton along with the Village Bank has awarded our Sister City Project a "Climate Action Microgrant" of $1,000 to support the ongoing EcoStove Program! 2024 has so far been a Banner Year for us, as we move toward our ambitious goal of installing 48 new efficient wood-burning stoves with chimneys before the end of the year! See posts below.

-Our man in San Juan del Sur, Jordan Marín, sent this shot of a kitchen wall behind one of our new EcoStoves in ther village of Carrizal. That wooden wall is stained with carbon from years of cooking over unvented open fires. Now Yamileth Narvaez has an amazing invention called a chimney, and doesn't have to shorten her life by breathing "airborne fine particulate matter" (smoke) all day every day. Smoke, BEGONE!
