Montessori at Sandy Ford is located at 2931 Sandy Ford Road in Newton, NC. The school will open its 2011-2012 year in this new location on approximately five acres of land in a rural setting with environmental study opportunities. The new building design was chosen for its energy saving features and its reduced impact on the local and global biosphere. Rainwater catchment and day-lighting systems, as well as other “Green” renewable technologies have been incorporated into the design of this facility which will also serve as a teaching tool for the students and the larger community about the importance of the emerging and timely
field of natural resource conservation. Montessori at Sandy Ford provides a primary classroom for children ages three to six, a lower elementary classroom for children ages six to nine, and an upper elementary classroom for children ages nine to twelve. The Directors, Mary Helen Cline and Kenyon Kelly, are certified by the Montessori Institute of America (MIA) and Montessori Educational Programs International (MEPI). Other staff members have received child development and Montessori training through the Montessori
Educational Programs International (MEPI). Montessori at Sandy Ford is accredited by MEPI, the primary classroom is licensed by the NC Office of Child Development and the elementary classrooms are approved by the NC Office of Non-Public Instruction.

On this day in 1952, Maria Montessori died peacefully at the age of 81 in her friend's garden. She dedicated herself to advancing her child-centered approach and broke barriers in education during tumultuous times. Everyday, we work towards the words written on her gravestone, "I beg the dear, all-powerful children to join me in creating peace in man and in the world."
