For Tracy Patrick, a teacher in the Newton Municipal School District, the gift of donated tissue changed the way she sees the world, quite literally.

Tracy was diagnosed with keratoconus at a young age. By 2008 or 2009, her vision had worsened significantly, and she began experiencing painful migraines and extreme sensitivity to light. Eventually, problems with her left cornea made working and driving increasingly difficult.

In the spring of 2010, Tracy received a corneal transplant.

The years that followed brought challenges and adjustments, including changes in her vision that could sometimes be noticeable to her students. But over time, her eye healed. In 2025, she was fitted with scleral contact lenses, and today, her vision can be corrected to nearly 20/20.

“I am incredibly thankful for my scleral lenses and especially for the tissue donor whose gift made it possible for my vision to be corrected.”

Tracy is also grateful for the physicians and organizations that have supported her journey, including The University of Mississippi Medical Center, Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services, Newton Municipal School District, as well as her family, friends, and White Stone church family.

During National Multiethnic Donor Awareness Month, sharing stories from all communities matters. When people see themselves and their experiences reflected in stories about donation and transplantation, it can help build understanding, encourage important conversations, and bring greater awareness to the lifesaving and life-changing impact of donation.

Thank you, Tracy, for sharing your story, and thank you to the donor whose gift continues to make a difference in her life. Because of this selfless gift, she is able to continue teaching and making an impact on young lives at the Newton County Career and Technical Center.
