Indeed, the answer to Friday's post was 5. Congratulations Josh Ruer on getting the answer. How many else got it right?

The solution is pretty straight forward:
(1) Since this is a square, we know that s^2+s^2=d^2
(2) This simplifies to 2s^2=d^2
(3) Substitute into our given equation and we find
2s^2+2s^2=100
(4) This solves to s^2=25 and of course then 2=5

Good job on getting the answer.

Did you figure out the solution to Wednesday's challenge?

Essentially, you had to set up the equations so that you subtracted the second from the first.

Step 1) Multiply [3x+8y =11] by 2 ===>6x+16y=22
Step 2) Subtract the second equation from the first
Step 3) Subtraction yields 6x-nx = -3
Step 4) Simplify: x(6-n) = -3
Step 5) So, what value of 'n' makes the solution undefined? Well, clearly if you make 'n' equal to '6', the left hand side of the equation becomes '0' and you would be left with '0=3' which is undefined.

So the answer is E. Congratulations if you got the answer right.

The answer to yesterday's post is E.
How do you solve it?
Step 1: Find the area of the circle and divide it in half:
Area = pi*2^2 = 4pi
1/2 Area = 2pi

Step 2: Find area of the triangle. Triangle ABC is an isosceles right triangle with a hypotenuse of 4:
AC^2+ BC^2 = 16..which translates to each of the sides equal 2*sqrt(2)
and the area is 4

Step 3: If you subtract the area in Step 1 from the area in Step 2, you will get the area of the area between the triangle and circle on both sides of the triangle. You only want the shaded region. Therefore, you divide your answer in half.

=================> 1/2* [(2pi) - 4 ]
=================> [pi - 2 ] ANSWER E

How to solve:
For an equilateral triangle, all sides are equal. Call the length of each side S. So the perimeter is 3S

The area of an equilateral triangle is
1/2*b*h = 1/2*S*(S/2sqrt(3))

Set perimeter equal to area and solve.
