Two weeks. One city. So many ways to see it differently. 🏙️🌊

Our final two Field Trip Weeks took rising 4th–9th grade students across Boston and beyond, inviting them to experience familiar places from entirely new perspectives.

During Boston Bound, students looked out over the city from View Boston, stepped inside the globe at the Mapparium, explored Boston’s history aboard a trolley and at the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, and encountered art at the ICA. Along the way, there was plenty of room for pure summer fun too, from mini golf to a sprinkle-filled stop at the Museum of Ice Cream.

The following week, Aquatic Adventures shifted the focus to the water that shapes our region. Students encountered marine life at the New England Aquarium, traveled through Boston by Duck Boat, took the ferry to Spectacle Island, spent time at Walden Pond, and explored the Charles River by pedal boat.

From city streets and museum galleries to islands, ponds, and riverways, these two weeks gave students the chance to learn by going places, noticing more, and experiencing their surroundings firsthand.

One last week of sunshine, play, and summer memories. ☀️

Our final week of Wellan Summer Program was all about soaking up the best parts of summer together.

Campers made the most of our new playground, cooled off during one last round of water play, created summer-inspired art, and spent plenty of time simply playing and being together. Elementary campers added some extra energy to the week with karaoke, dancing, and plenty of chances to be silly with friends.

And because no summer finale is complete without a treat, Kona Ice stopped by for a colorful, icy celebration to close out the season. 🍧

Nine weeks brought new experiences, new friendships, plenty of creativity, and countless moments of summer joy. Thank you to our campers, families, counselors, and staff for making Wellan Summer 2026 such a memorable one.

This week’s biggest adventure came with fur, scales, shells, and a few surprises. 🐢🦎🐇

During Adventure Awaits week, campers welcomed Curious Creatures for an up-close introduction to animals they don’t encounter every day.

Students met everything from soft, furry mammals to reptiles, amphibians, and even a scorpion. Along the way, they learned about how different animals move, eat, protect themselves, and adapt to their environments.

The best part? Getting close enough to really observe them. Campers asked questions, noticed tiny details, and, when appropriate, had the chance to gently touch and interact with the animals themselves.

Experiences like this turn curiosity into something tangible: not just learning about an animal, but watching it move, noticing its texture, and discovering what makes each species unique.

Of course, the rest of the week still held plenty of summer adventure through art, outdoor play, water fun, and time with friends.

Art blossomed in every form during our latest Studio Session. 🌸

During Art in Bloom, students explored floral design through a wide range of materials and techniques.

They created diamond paintings, painted flower pots, shaped flowers from crepe paper and air-dry clay, and even experimented with frosting as a decorative medium while designing floral sugar cookies.

Throughout the week, students considered how the same natural forms can be interpreted differently depending on material, texture, scale, and technique.

Field trips extended that exploration beyond the studio. Campers visited the Glass Flowers exhibit at the Harvard Museum of Natural History, the Fenway Victory Gardens, and the floral courtyard at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, finding inspiration in both carefully crafted artwork and living landscapes.

From museum galleries to garden paths to the studio table, the week invited students to observe closely, experiment freely, and translate what they noticed into their own creative work.

We were buzzing with excitement during Buggin’ Out week! 🐞🕷️

Across our Beginner, Primary, and Elementary groups, campers explored the world of bugs through art, movement, music, and imaginative play.

Students created crafty insects, honeycomb pictures, ladybugs, ant farms, and other bug-inspired projects. Younger campers sang favorites like “Itsy Bitsy Spider” and “The Ants Go Marching,” while all groups made the most of sunny days with water play, yoga, gym, outdoor time, and afternoons at Crystal Lake.

This week also brought two especially exciting highlights: campers finally got to enjoy Wellan’s newly renovated playground, and everyone joined in our Bug Jamboree with handmade bug headbands, bug tattoos, and a spider web obstacle course.

From tiny creatures to big adventures, it was a week full of movement, creativity, and summer fun.

Building a better world can begin with small ideas, helpful hands, and a little imagination. 🌎

During this week’s Wellan Summer Program, students explored what it means to contribute to their communities through creativity, movement, and hands-on experiences.

Beginner students decorated their own worlds, while Primary students designed construction trucks and experimented with fuse beads during Open Studio. In Elementary, Wellan Design Lab Specialist Merav led projects focused on reusing and upcycling materials, woodworking, and finding creative ways to give everyday objects new purpose.

Campers across all three groups also welcomed two local community helpers: Officer Justin and Officer Leo, a Newton Police Department K-9. Students had the opportunity to meet Officer Leo, learn about his work, and see how people and animals can work together to help keep a community safe.

Through building, creating, and learning from those who serve others, students discovered that making a positive difference can take many forms.

Tiny tiles, bold ideas, and one shared work of art. 🎨

During our latest Summer Studio Session, rising 4th–9th grade students explored murals, mosaics, graffiti, and the many ways public art can bring color, identity, and meaning to a community.

Students began by observing murals around Newton Centre and discussing how artists use scale, placement, imagery, and style to communicate with the public. Back in the studio, they experimented with diamond painting, sticker and cartoon design, collaborative painting, and even edible cookie murals.

One of the week’s central projects was a mosaic of the Wellan owl. Students worked together to tile and grout the mural, which will become a lasting addition to the lower level of our Main Building.

A field trip to Graffiti Alley in Cambridge offered another perspective on public art. Students examined the work of local artists, learned about safety and etiquette in a shared creative space, and added their own contributions to the evolving walls.

Through each project, students experienced how individual ideas can become part of something larger when artists observe, plan, collaborate, and create together.

It was a dino-mite week at Wellan Summer Program! 🦕

Across our Beginner, Primary, and Elementary groups, students explored Dino Days through art, movement, games, and imaginative play.

They created tissue-paper dinosaurs, cracking dinosaur eggs, puffy-paint artwork, and fuse-bead designs. Between projects, campers made the most of the summer sunshine with walks, outdoor games, water play, yoga, music, gym, and time at Crystal Lake.

Older Primary and Elementary students also welcomed educators from the Discovery Museum for a hands-on dinosaur workshop. Students learned how fossils form and what they can reveal about prehistoric life, then stepped into the role of paleontologists as they carefully excavated replica fossils from sand. Through close observation, discussion, drawing, and recording their findings, they experienced how scientists use evidence to study creatures from the distant past.

From creative projects to outdoor adventures, Dino Days gave students plenty of ways to play, explore, and make new discoveries together.

What can students learn from a piece of clay? Patience, problem-solving, and the confidence to keep shaping an idea.

During our latest Summer Studio Session, rising 4th–9th grade students explored ceramics through both functional and sculptural projects.

They practiced foundational handbuilding techniques while creating mugs and trinket trays, collaborated on a miniature three-dimensional room, and experimented with forming clay on a mini pottery wheel.

As their ideas developed, students created tiny creatures, miniature games, and other whimsical sculptures. Each project required them to make choices, solve structural challenges, revise their approach, and carefully add color and decorative details through glazing.

A visit to the Fuller Craft Museum helped students connect their own studio work with the creations of contemporary artists. Ceramic installations and an immersive soft-sculpture exhibition offered fresh inspiration and expanded their sense of what craft can become.

From first sketch to final glaze, the week invited students to experiment, persist, and turn imagination into form.

For two weeks, our Counselors-in-Training experienced summer camp from a new perspective: not simply as participants, but as emerging mentors and leaders. ☀️

CITs began by learning about child development, Montessori observation, play-based learning, and the routines and responsibilities of a summer classroom. They also earned Red Cross babysitting certification and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certification.

They then put that learning into practice in assigned classrooms, where they built relationships with younger campers, supported daily activities, and planned and led crafts of their own.

Along the way, they developed practical skills through resume building, reflection, teamwork, and conversations about work styles and professional responsibility. Group outings, games, and shared challenges also helped them grow as a team.

The session closed with a celebration of their progress. Each CIT received a certificate, personal mementos, and a stone reading “Capable,” a fitting reminder of the confidence, care, and leadership they demonstrated throughout the program.

We are proud of the thoughtful way they stepped into this new role and contributed to the Wellan Summer community.
