Happy Tech Tuesday!

SRVRTC Newport offers students a plethora of Health Science related paths through Health Science Technology (HST), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) options.

Newport’s HST program is a two-year program that helps prepare high school students for various health careers through a blend of academic instruction, hands-on laboratory practice, and clinical experience. The course introduces students to diverse healthcare professions, ranging from physician and pre-med tracks to biomedical technology, nursing, sports medicine, emergency medicine, and diagnostic medicine.

The HST program is a highly successful program that has been in place since SRVRTC opened in Newport more than 30 years ago. Students can earn ten college credits in Human Biology, Medical Terminology and Law & Ethics in Health through River Valley Community College at no cost to students/families. Graduates from the program have gone on to become X-ray technicians, physical therapists, nurses, doctors, psychologists, dental hygienists, and EMTs.

Newport also offers Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), a certification course which prepares the student for national certification and state licensure. Authorized by the New Hampshire Department of Safety’s Bureau of EMS, the foundational level of emergency medical services (EMS) care, this two semester certification program prepares students to assess and treat victims of sudden illness and injury. All EMTs must understand how to handle emergency situations and rely upon their training to manage each situation they face. This program prepares the EMT student to perform and provide patient assessment, bleeding control, airway management, oxygen delivery, splinting and spinal immobilization, administration of medications, and cardiac arrest management. After successful completion of the EMT program students must pass the national cognitive exam to become certified by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) in order to become eligible for state licensure.

Over the last eight years, SRVRTC has contracted with community partners who offer LNA courses at no cost to our students. More recently, students have also accessed LNA certification through local employment opportunities. Students can earn their license in as little as six weeks. We continue to support students in earning LNA certifications through these and similar approaches.

IT'S TECH TUESDAY!

We’re excited to welcome Mr. Nicholas Smallwood to the Sugar River Valley Regional Technical Center as the instructor for our brand-new Public Safety Program!

With 20 years of experience as a firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain, and EMS professional, Mr. Smallwood brings real-world experience from military service and communities throughout New Hampshire directly into the classroom. He has trained and mentored hundreds of firefighters and is passionate about preparing the next generation of first responders and community leaders.

So, what is Public Safety all about? This program is for students who are interested in careers in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical Services, Fire Service, Emergency Management, or Homeland Security. Our communities need more first responders — and this program is a great place to start exploring a career where students can serve others, work as a team, and make a difference.

Interested students should talk to their guidance counselors about enrolling!
