Today is a reminder of how connected we all are to the health of our oceans and wildlife. Every shark we tag and every sample we collect helps us better understand and protect these animals so they remain part of our oceans for generations to come.
We’re SO lucky to spend our days alongside some pretty incredible shark moms!
Shark pups may be independent from the moment they’re born, but their moms put huge amounts of energy into growing and protecting them before they enter the world.🦈✨
Proof that motherhood comes in many forms, and every one deserves celebrating 💙
Happy Mother’s Day 💙

Kirsty, Issy & Ava had an amazing time visiting Claggett Creek Middle School this week, speaking with 185+ incredible students! 🌊🦈
We were thrilled to connect with 6th-8th grade AVID classes about pathways into marine science and share the exciting research we’re doing on ‘big fish’ right here in their backyard - and beyond. Science communication and community engagement are a huge part of what we do, and it’s always rewarding to spark curiosity and conversation. 💫
We hope we inspired some future marine biologists, educators, and STEM leaders! And if nothing else… they now know there are 16 shark species in Oregon - how cool is that?! 🙌 🦈

We’ve been busy the past few days prepping gear as we kick off a new collaborative project with 🦈🔬
As part of the Darwin Plus project “Safeguarding vulnerable life-stages in sharks”, we’ll be studying Caribbean reef sharks - satellite tagging mature males and pregnant females to track their movements and pupping events.
Our PhD candidate .bio.ballard is in the Cayman Islands helping with fieldwork and data collection.
Proud to partner with the Department of Environment Cayman Islands on this work.
Funded by the UK Government through Darwin Plus

What does a year of marine research, outreach and conservation look like? Here are just a few metrics to help tell our research story from 2025. Thank you to all our researchers, collaborators, and supporters for making these outputs possible. Here’s to 2026 being bigger and sharkier! 🦈

A special thank you to the for generously donating tuna and salmon racks to the Big Fish Lab! The parts of fish that are left over after filleting are often discarded but make excellent bait when we conduct fieldwork. Not only does this help us collect vital data, but it allows us to do it more sustainably! By sourcing them locally from the Chelsea Rose, we not only reduce waste, but we also strengthen our lies to the local community in Newport!
If you’re ever in Newport, be sure to swing by the Chelsea Rose at Port Dock 3 to get fresh, locally caught seafood straight off the docks! Find out more at
