NCSU Encore Program

The NCSU Encore Program provides summer and after school programming for 10 sites in the North Count Hello all!

The Encore Program offers after school and summer programming to 10 sites across the North Country Supervisory Union, including Brighton, Charleston, Coventry, Derby, Jay/Westfield, Lowell, Newport Town, Newport City, and Troy. This page has been created in order to keep communities informed of the amazing opportunities that Encore creates. Encore is funded largely in part by the Century 21 grant,

allowing programming to be offered for little to no cost to its attendees. It is also funded by our local schools, donations, and a number of small grants that come together to allow children to learn exciting new skills like gardening, cooking, archery, survival, boating, sewing, and so much more! Check in with this page often to see what is being offered, as well as for date changes, field trip information, cancellations, etc.

Closely connected with the joy of being around the water earlier in the month, there has been a growing group of students who want to fish... every day!

Encore participants are scientists—running experiments, testing ideas, and learning how the world works through play and discovery.

Day 24: Excitement
Sometimes in summer Encore joy is found in the excitement of doing something at school that you don't usually get to do... like getting soaked with hoses! (there was a lot of that during the first couple of VERY hot weeks!)

Day 23: Arts and Crafts
What is a summer camp without unique and fun summer projects! Here you see a bandana bag and CD mobile, two of hundreds of fun projects from this summer.

Day 22- Biking!
Every site gets a chance to bike for at least one week per summer, often many more. There are bikes and helmets of all sizes, including a tandem bike, and two adaptive bikes. This is a summer favorite!

Day 21- Learning
Learning can be so much fun! Whether it’s hearing from local author Natalie Kinsey-Warnock through CLiF events or learning about the life cycles of butterflies, summer learning here is always hands-on and engaging!

Thank you to the Children's Literacy Foundation for another three awesome summer reader events! All youth who attend get to hear from an amazing local author about their work AND pick out two free books from hundreds of choices to keep.

Day 20- Responsibility
Whether it is supporting the next climber at Coutts, helping clean up for the group at the school, or repairing bikes, for example, youth step up and help the summer run smoothly.

Day 19– Connecting with the Community

Perhaps the most fun example of this comes from the Newport City Program, which for many years now has run a Farmers Market week featuring the food and art youth make all week. Youth run the register, chat with shoppers, show off their skills, and make amazing connections!

Day 18– Woodworking & Engineering (Part 2): On-Site & NCCC

The building didn't stop with the Mobile Woodworking Lab! During an awesome trip to the North Country Career Center, youth stepped up their engineering skills—learning to bend, cut, drill, and rivet metal to craft their own custom boxes.

At program sites, the creativity was always flowing for things like using giant Magna-Tiles to engineer sturdy forts and testing patterns to design the ultimate aerodynamic paper airplanes

Day 17: Woodworking and Engineering- Part 1- The Mobile Woodworking Lab

For five years now, our sites have been lucky enough to host the NCSU Mobile Woodworking Lab, and the results are always incredible! From basic measuring to hands-on engineering, our students have used this amazing resource to craft and build all kinds of creative projects.
