Thanks Caleb for the awesome reporting on today's Biochar Makers Club outing!

Had a blast making another round of biochar with @newledohub today, this time out at Nye beach, partially because it’s quite hot inland, but also it’s just sooo dry that even being contained and smokeless this was definitely the best call. We also roasted some oyster shells for calcium carbonate using a pit kiln(and some brats of course). This was also great because we got to talk with so many curious folks wondering what we were doing and introduce them to Biochar! For those curious these burners have holes drilled in the bottom and a center pipe with slots cut in it that goes about 3/4’s the height of the barrel. This allows dried chips to be used which in a ring style kiln have a tendency to smother and create a lot of smoke. They can hold about 2.5-3 cattle protein lick tubs worth of chips(we loaded them with 2 tubs each today and came away with 1 tub of biochar) so very roughly 25% efficiency. Which is great! A lot of simple styles range around 17-20%.

Wow - what a burn frenzy at Sunday's Biochar Makers Club. We were able to transform large piles of long branches and brambles into 2+ cubic yards of biochar in our new kiln. Plus we reached just the right heat to cook up some vegan dogs! Thanks to all the amazing char stars that helped keep the fire burning!

Newledo Biochar Makers Club - Happening this Sunday, May 10, 1pm-4pm. We'll be doing more tests with our new kiln. This is a prototype, based on the Ring of Fire and other onsite biochar kilns, that enables us to burn branches and small logs. As that this model requires keeping the fire burning for a while, we'll be cooking up some hot dogs and smores over this big flame! Come on by!
