Congrats to Charlene Pérez Santos! 🐋🌊
Charlene, an M.S. student at the Ocean Ecology Lab, was awarded the HSO Travel Award to attend the 2025 AMLC Scientific Meeting in sunny San Juan, Puerto Rico! ☀️🇵🇷 This Latin America–focused event brought together marine scientists from across the region and the Caribbean.
Charlene was invited to speak in a special radio session about her research on the overlap between vessel traffic and humpback whales in Pacific Mexico , a hot topic in marine conservation! 🐳🚤
During her trip, she also visited the Manatee Conservation Center, connecting with fellow scientists and conservationists to exchange ideas and build collaborations for the future. 🤝
Way to represent HSO and the Marine Mammal Institute! 🧳📡🌊

🌿Seaweed science on the big stage!🌊
HSO Winter Travel Award recipient Angelina Zuelow (PhD Candidate, Henkel Lab) represented OSU at the International Seaweed Symposium in beautiful Victoria, BC this May! 🧳🍁
She presented her research on Hedophyllum sessile (yes, that's her with the star species 🌿📸), gained valuable feedback, and left inspired by cutting-edge macroalgae science. 💡📚
Big thanks to the Director’s Office for making this possible by supporting her lodging — and stay tuned, because Angelina is now turning this talk into a manuscript! 📝✨

We are on a roll with awards! 🎉
Huge congratulations to Luke for attending the Western Society of Naturalists Conference in November 2024 with the support of an HSO Travel Award! 🌊✨
Thanks to this award, Luke was able to fully cover the costs of attending—including registration, transportation, accommodation, and food—making this invaluable experience possible. At the conference, Luke presented his latest research on spatially explicit hindcasts of larval northern anchovy abundance in relation to adult abundance, contributing to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms driving anchovy recruitment. 🐟📊
Not only did Luke receive engaging questions and feedback on his talk, but he also had the chance to network with graduate students and early career professionals, gaining insights into cutting-edge marine science research.
This is exactly what HSO is all about—supporting students as they grow, learn, and share their science with the world! 🌍💙
Way to go, Luke! 👏👏
