Our Volunteer Training classes have been scheduled for the Fall. If you plan to chaperone a field trip, volunteer in your student's classroom or at a school event, you must be a trained, background checked and registered volunteer with Carteret County Public Schools. You only need to attend one class and submit a background check to apply. You do not need to pre-register for one of our classes; just pick the day and time that work with your schedule. *You will need to bring your government issued ID and a device, such as a cell phone to complete your online background check form.
These are the ONLY classes that will be offered in the fall, so make plans to attend a class if you need to be trained. If you have questions about the volunteer training class or your volunteer status, reach out to Mrs. Banks, School Counselor by phone (252) 223-4201, email- [email protected] or through Dojo message.

Good Evening NES Hawks!

This is Mrs. Parish calling with updates and reminders for the week ahead:

Thank you for a wonderful first week of school! It’s great to have our students back in the building! The first days of school were spent getting to know each other and going over routines and expectations. Our students are excelling and showing us that they are ready to SOAR into a great school year!

Some important reminders and dates to share with you are as follows:
Monday, August 31st through mid September, our beginning of year testing for early literacy skills and math will begin for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Please ensure that your student is present each day so that we can complete all of our testing within the timeframe designated by the state and the district.

Tuesday, September 1st is the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. We are proud to recognize and celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino American families. We appreciate the many backgrounds and experiences that make our school community special!

On Wednesday, September 2nd, 3rd grade students will participate in the Beginning of Grade (BOG) 3 Reading Test. This is solely to collect baseline data on students’ reading skills. It will not count for a grade.

The Here Comes the Bus app usually takes the first couple of weeks of school to begin working. This is due to the district waiting for all bus routes to be finalized. We hope this app will be up and running soon!

If you are still in need of a car tag, please let your student’s teacher know or call our front office and we will assist you.

Our data manager, Ms. Linda Josey, will continue to reach out to families who have not been able to access the Parent Portal or have not been able to complete the beginning of year forms.

Upcoming volunteer trainings will be posted on ClassDojo and Facebook. The first volunteer training will take place on Thursday, September 10th, at 8 a.m.

And finally, let’s soar together into another successful week. Thank you for all of your support from home. We will see our Hawks tomorrow morning!

Summer Reading Challenge complete!

These NES Hawks flew through their summer reading goals by reading daily. Today, we celebrated our Grade 1–5 Finishers with:
🌟 Official "Star Reader" backpack brag tags
📖 Fresh reads from the Book Vending Machine
🍩 Delicious celebratory doughnuts!

Way to show true Hawk Pride all summer long and avoid that "Summer Slide"!

(Please note: a few students missed the celebration today but will be celebrated on Monday when I see them.)

Congratulations to 3rd grade teacher, Caroline Shults! Thank you Gaffer’s!! 🎉💙💛

Good Evening NES Hawks!

This is your principal, Laura Parish, calling to give you updates and reminders for the first week of school! This message will be a little longer than normal because I have a lot of information to share with you. If this message cuts out early, you can find it on ClassDojo and Facebook.

This Monday, August 24th, is the first day of school. Drop-off will begin at 7:30. We will have staff on duty at this time to assist our students. Please do not let students out of the car before 7:30 because we will not have staff on duty until then.

If you are walking your students from across the street, they must have an adult with them until 7:30. The tardy bell rings at 8:00. Students who would like to eat breakfast in the cafeteria should arrive prior to 7:55.

To maintain the safety of all of our students, grown ups who walk their students up to the front entrance will be asked to "kiss and go," and our staff members will assist your student with locating his or her classroom or the cafeteria as well as bringing any extra supplies to his or her classroom. Thank you for your understanding of this safety protocol.

Kindergarten students will start this week on staggered entry. On Kindergarten students’ staggered entry day, students and parents may begin arriving at 8:45 AM. Our parent meeting will begin promptly at 9:00 while students are spending time with their new friends in their classroom. Please note that bus transportation will not be available to school the morning of staggered entry; however, Kindergarteners will take their regular transportation home. All Kindergarten students will attend their first full day of school on Thursday, August 27th.

Afternoon dismissal is at 3:00. Please have your car tag posted so that staff can easily call your student's car tag number over the radio. Vehicles without a car tag will be asked to park and will have to wait until all cars have gone through the line before we can assist. There are no exceptions to this rule so that we can maintain the safety of all students. Parents picking up by car are asked to remain in their vehicle but if you and your student are walking home, we ask that you wait on the concrete top in front of the gym, present a car tag or ID to staff, and your student will be dismissed after the car line has ended.

Transportation changes and early check-outs must take place by 2:20 p.m. This ensures that we have time to relay changes to our teachers and get students in the correct location for dismissal.

To set our students up for success, we will be spending the first month of school teaching and practicing our school procedures and expectations. Please note that we ask our students’ grown-ups to refrain from joining us for lunch until Monday, October 5th.

Our bus drivers have been working hard and on overtime to work on their bus routes. As always on the first week of school, there will be minor changes and delays. We ask for your patience and understanding as our number one goal is to get all of our bus riders to and from school safely. Students should be standing at their bus stop 5-10 minutes before their assigned pick-up time. Kindergarten students must have an adult at their bus stop in order to be dropped off.

Lastly, please be sure to join your student’s ClassDojo. This is where important and up-to-date information is shared. If you are on Facebook, be sure to follow us as important information is shared there as well.

The night before the first day of school is an exciting time for all of us. I hope you can rest in knowing that each and every one of our students will be loved and well taken care of. Thank you for your support from home. This is going to be an amazing school year for all of us! We will see you tomorrow NES Hawks!

Kiss, Hug & Let Them Soar! 🦅

Beginning on the very first day of school, we ask that parents and families say their goodbyes at the school entrance and allow our staff to help students make their way inside. For safety and to help our students quickly build confidence and independence, grown-ups are asked to not enter the building during morning drop-off.

We know those first day goodbyes can be tough for grown-ups, too! Give them a kiss, give them a hug, and trust us to take great care of your baby as they spread their wings and soar! 💙🦅
