What can we do at home?

Mathematics at home does not need to be formal pencil/paper instruction. You can support the instruction taking place, and in the classroom, through playing games and by talking about mathematics in day-to-day events.

Playing games with your child involving numbers, dice, and counting provides for important experiences in making sense of mathematics.

There are lots of opportunities around us for counting, reading numbers, comparing numbers, comparing quantities, adding and subtracting, and simply talking about mathematics. These opportunities occur while at home, driving in the car, shopping, taking a walk……just about everywhere.

Encouraging your child to explain how they arrived at their answer can provide great information into their way of thinking. Try to present a new opportunity for the child to correct the mathematical strategy rather than scolding and saying, “That’s wrong.”

A math game to play while in the car:

Road trip math game 1: Creative Counting
Simple counting games are great for younger children, with lots of opportunities for counting things they see – trucks, red cars, blue signs etc…

This could be made more challenging by changing how many points each is worth, so children could count up in twos or threes etc…

Using a strategy-based approach helps students master their addition and subtraction facts. One such strategy for tackling those harder facts, like 7 + 8, is the using the Doubles strategy.
Doubles:
1+1
2+2
3+3
4+4
5+5
6+6
7+7
8+8
9+9
10+10
You can practice this at home. You’ll need two dice. You can use either standard dice (1-6) or ten-sided dice (0-9). If your child rolls a double, say the Doubles Chants with them:
Double, double Bump, bump - (bump fists together)
Double, double Jump, jump - (jump in the air)

Outside Math Games

Taking the learning outdoors is a great way to engage and motivate kids. The fresh air and change of scenery can be just what children need to get excited about playing with and practicing math concepts. Throughout the Summer I will post math games that are easy to set up, have little prep, and will help to strengthen your child's math skills.

Egg counting game. Get out your plastic Easter eggs and learn with them. This egg counting game is a great way for preschoolers and kindergartners to practice number identification, counting and one-to-one correspondence.

EGG NUMBER IDENTIFICATION AND COUNTING GAME

Playing with numbers is a lot of fun. You can set up a simple move and learn game to practice number identification and counting with some of our many plastic eggs.

Egg Number Game Supplies:
-plastic eggs
-bucket or basket
-cards with the numbers you want to practice on them

Write the numbers 11-18 on small cards and spread the eggs out. Have your child choose a card, read the number, and then add that many eggs to their bucket.

It gives them some extra number identification and counting practice of numbers that can be a little trickier to remember in isolation.

This can be used with any number set and with any set of objects. (Ex. 20-29 using coins) Using the eggs and spreading them out in the yard or a park allows you to get outside and enjoy the sunshine.
