The Brigadoon Civic League is seeking local artists to contribute original designs for permanent information kiosks that will be installed in Brigadoon Pines Park and Brigadoon Woods Park, two of the community’s most heavily visited public spaces.

Selected artwork will be featured as a large-scale vinyl wrap applied to the doors and back panels of each kiosk. In addition, the back panel design will also be reproduced as a fabric print for display inside the kiosk over the cork.

Scientists have found a bizarre new use for one of the world’s most annoying insects: turning dead mosquitoes into tiny 3D printer parts.

The process is called “3D necroprinting,” and it uses the needle-like mouthpart of a deceased female mosquito as an ultra-fine printing nozzle. That tiny tube, called a proboscis, is normally used to pierce skin and drink blood, but researchers found it can also squeeze out microscopic lines of printing material with shocking precision.

In tests, the mosquito nozzle printed structures as thin as about 20 micrometers, roughly half the width of a human hair. Researchers even used it to create tiny honeycomb shapes, maple leaf designs, and cell-supporting bioscaffolds.

The strangest part is that these natural nozzles may be cheaper and more biodegradable than some commercial 3D printing tips.

So yes, mosquitoes may finally have a useful purpose.
