On a bustling campus, hardly a day can go by without finding something going on. From historic milestones and annual traditions to the growth of some of the biggest events on campus, the 2010s gave Captains plenty of opportunities to create lifelong memories.

The 2010s marked an important time in the growth of Christopher Newport University. As the decade draws to a close, we’ll spend the last few days of 2019 highlighting some of the many successes, traditions and transformations that took place. On the first day, we take a look at the visual changes of the campus over the decade.

to CNU 2011: CNU is featured in The Princeton Review's “best colleges” guidebook, Forbes Magazine ranks CNU No. 4 of the top 20 colleges for minorities in STEM, and U.S. News ranks us the No. 6 Up-and-Coming” regional university in the South.

Also in 2011, some great people walked across the stage at commencement.

to CNU 2010: McMurran Hall opens for students in the Departments of English, Government, History, Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures, and Philosophy and Religious Studies.

to CNU 2009: CNU continues to garner national attention as an exemplary institution of higher learning. In 2009, Forbes.com ranked CNU among the top 15 percent of the nation’s four-year undergraduate institutions based on an annual review of the 600 best colleges and universities!

to CNU 2008: Construction continues and the green wall gets painted.

Also in 2008, the Paul and Rosemary Trible Library opens. With computer workstations and a comprehensive media center, it is the campus hub for research, learning and scholarly interaction.

The Luter School of Business is established in 2008, named for longtime supporter and Chairman of the Board of Smithfield Foods, Joseph W. Luter, III. The Luter School offers a comprehensive curriculum in business administration with concentrations in accounting, finance, management and marketing.
