Crittenden Middle School

Crittenden Middle School Crittenden Middle School is the only Math, Science and Technology Magnet school in Newport News, Va. By 1965, three additional sections had been constructed.

The main section of the school building was built in 1949 as a high school and named in honor of noted scientist George Washington Carver. The school became Carver Intermediate School in 1971. In 1980 it was renamed in honor of former Principal Homer L. Hines. The school was closed in the spring of 1990 for $7.3 million renovation and another school with the Hines namesake was built in a nearby se

ction of the city. Crittenden Middle School opened its doors in the spring of 1995 as the temporary site for the student body and staff of Newsome Park Middle School. The school was known Newsome Park Middle School at Crittenden." In the fall of 1995, Crittenden Middle School became the site of an exciting new magnet program with a science, math and technology theme in addition to a comprehensive program for general studies. The school €™s student body capacity is 1200 with approximately 100 teachers and support staff. The school colors are purple and silver with a Cougar as the school mascot. Benjamin A. Hogan, who has been with Newport News Public Schools for 29 years, became the original principal of Crittenden Middle School. The building was officially dedicated on Sunday, September 24th, 1995. Mrs. Crittenden and other community citizens looked on proudly as the school that has housed so much history and promise for the City of Newport News, continue its legacy for new generations of school children.

Another great day of moving the needle forward here at the Critt! 🐾

Our Cougars are engaged in meaningful learning through gallery walks, rich discussions, and dynamic instruction led by our amazing teachers: Ms. Chandler, Mr. Moore, Mr. Bussey, Ms. Campbell, Ms. Greene, and Ms. Langdon.

We also appreciate our counseling team members, Mrs. Joseph and Ms. McAdams, for facilitating an impactful classroom guidance lesson focused on supporting our students beyond the classroom.

Every day, our staff continues to create opportunities for our Cougars to learn, grow, and climb higher. ⛰️🐾
