Hampton Roads Dyslexia Center is currently seeking certified Wilson Language Therapists for their Summer Slide program. I'd be happy to make the introduction if you are interested.
I woke up to this great text from one of our clients this morning:

"A. is in her reading group she gets pulled for during school. They were asked to read the book and find a glued word. A. was so excited. She said, "I know that, but they haven't learned it in this class yet. She's so proud!"

We work hard to make sure the skills we are teaching at the center are generalizing to the classroom. Open communication with our students' parents, schools, and teachers helps our kids succeed.

If your child is struggling, we have a few new openings for the upcoming semester.
As we approach the new school semester, Hampton Roads Dyslexia Center has openings for at least three new students. If you or someone you know is in need of some extra help, please send them our way! Happy Holidays!

Exciting News! We are expanding our offerings to include K-5 math with Ms. Tammy Krejcarek! Tammy will have limited spots available at the Newport News office on Saturdays. Spots will go FAST!
Tammy’s formal education began with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Norfolk State University. She then went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Counseling from William & Mary (Go, Tribe!) before earning her Ed.S. in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in Special Education.
In addition to her advanced degrees and teaching license, Tammy also holds a Math Specialist Endorsement in grades K-12. Ms. Krejcarek spent 18 years teaching and serving local school divisions as a Math Specialist. She has collaborated with teachers in multiple school divisions to improve their teaching in mathematics, raising scores in one school by over 80%! Tammy is well known in the community for her expertise in effective mathematical instruction and provides professional development across divisions. She has over 20 years’ experience tutoring elementary students. Tammy will communicate with your child’s teacher to ensure that sessions are both targeted and purposeful while at the same time being fun and engaging. Tammy recognizes students often feel math is too hard for them, so she strives to boost their self-confidence along the way.
Ms. Krejcarek has 10 years of school administration experience and currently works full time as an elementary school principal. However, she cannot give up the joy of working 1:1 with students who need extra support in math. In her spare time, she loves hanging out with her daughter along with her two labs, Gouda, and Lola.
Please join me in welcoming Ms. Krejcarek to HRDC!

This. All of this.

Our children deserve understanding and support, and our teachers deserve the necessary training to help them. Without trained teachers and literacy instruction based on the science of reading, they are challenged when “learning to read” moves over to “reading to learn”. Typically of average to high intelligence, these individuals often describe a level of shame that produces anxiety which leads to emotional distress that is problematic.

More exciting news! I am THRILLED to share another FANTASTIC educator has agreed to share her gifts and talents to meet the demands of our community. Please give a hearty welcome to Ms. Diana Furman! 💜

Diana Furman has worked in the education sector for over 25 years. She received her first Master’s degree from Capella University in Literacy and Reading and her second Master’s degree from University of Virginia in Curriculum and Instruction. She holds endorsements as a Reading Specialist for grades K-12, Preschool Special Education, and PK-3 teaching. She has attended structured literacy professional development course offerings through William and Mary’s T-TAC department. Diana has also received extensive training in the science of reading through LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling). She is currently a local LETRS facilitator.
Students who often are unsuccessful with responding to Tier 1 literacy instruction continue to ignite her professional purpose and passion as a reading teacher. She is a strong advocate for children with significant reading difficulties as she was unable to read until the age of ten. She recognizes that all students benefit from explicit and responsive instruction in order to maximize their full potential as readers.
Diana firmly believes that literacy development is a crucial right for all students and that their families are to be respected as vital partners and advocates in their student’s literacy journey.

Judge rules Clark County School District 'substantially' violated federal education disability law - The Nevada Independent

A fellow guest speaker at William and Mary last night was the lawyer who won this due process case on the federal level in Nevada. She was brilliant and it is my fervent hope that more families will take up the hard mantle to bring suit if necessary to get the research-based interventions their children REQUIRE to receive FAPE.

Judge rules Clark County School District 'substantially' violated federal education disability law - The Nevada Independent In a stinging rebuke, Judge Richard Boulware wrote that the school district failed to respond to the student's specific needs and ignored professional recommendations.

Honored to be back to speak with the wonderful law students at William and Mary’s PELE Clinc. ALL research proves students with dyslexia MUST be taught with a structured literacy program. It is non negotiable.

As 2-22-22 approaches…The importance of morphology and etymology!

It's 2-2-22. We have to talk about two, don't we?

Why the in two? That's what I wondered as a young student.

The marks an etymological relationship.

Each word in the graphic has a meaning connection to "two," and the spelling reveals that connection.

Two threads in twine and twill. Joining two into one with twist. Two tens in twenty. Two sixes in twelve. The "half light" between light and dark in twilight.

English makes sense!

She said Chesterfield failed her daughter. Now she wants them to pay for private school.

It’s a shame families have to fight for their children’s education when effective interventions exist.

She said Chesterfield failed her daughter. Now she wants them to pay for private school. A Chesterfield family has filed a request for a due process hearing asking for Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS) to cover their daughter’s private education after they said the school system failed their child.

We are growing! Please join me in welcoming Andrea Brooks-Velez to the HRDC family. Andrea joins the team at HRDC with much enthusiasm and eagerness to help students learn to read. She believes wholeheartedly in the “Wilson Works” philosophy and is always seeking opportunities to expand her knowledge in the science of reading! Andrea initially embarked on her Wilson journey two years ago in a highly determined effort to provide her son with the services he needed to become a fluent reader, as well as teach him to embrace his own Dyslexia. In 2021, she successfully completed her level one Wilson certification and is now a Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner. She currently homeschools her two children and is excited to help other struggling students learn to read. In addition to her Wilson credentials, Andrea holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy and Minor in Psychology from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida. She also holds a Master of Severe Disabilities degree from Norfolk State University, Norfolk, Virginia. In her spare time, Andrea loves to spend time with her husband and children, craft, read, and travel to see her extended family in Florida! We are thrilled to have her join us!
