Investing in your conference and it's presenters is essential to the growth of your attendees. Seeing the same folks year after year can create a lack of enthusiasm and engagement.

Asking your attendees what will make them better and what they need to develop is key. Planning accordingly to provide that need is so important to their growth!

We made it difficult to choose your your courses because the need is great! We made every effort and planned accordingly to deliver 4 tracks at the Summit this year!

Every interaction in code enforcement has the potential to shape the outcome of a case. Often, the difference between cooperation and conflict comes down to how we communicate.

At the 2026 CodeComply Summit, retired law enforcement lieutenant John Strain from Chief Leadership will lead Effective Field Communication Techniques & Using Emotional Intelligence, a practical session focused on the skills that help professionals navigate difficult conversations with confidence and professionalism. Drawing on 30 years of experience in patrol, investigations, SWAT, training, and leadership, John shares real-world strategies that help officers build rapport, manage emotions, improve situational awareness, and reduce conflict before situations escalate.

This course reminds us that officer safety starts long before a confrontation becomes physical. Strong communication, empathy, and emotional intelligence are not just leadership skills. They are essential tools that help create safer interactions, stronger community relationships, and better outcomes for everyone involved.

For many of us in supervisory more management positions, we never get formal training on how to actually do many supervisory tasks that is common when we transition into those roles. This is why we have this course: Introduction to Employee Evaluations in our Career Development and Growth Track

Employee evaluations can be one of the toughest responsibilities for new supervisors, especially in code enforcement. This course gives emerging leaders a practical introduction to preparing, writing, and delivering evaluations in a clear, fair, and professional way.

Led by Sara Kelley, Code Enforcement Manager for the City of Hemet, the session will cover common evaluation areas such as job performance, communication, professionalism, productivity, consistency, goal-setting, leadership potential, and areas for improvement. Attendees will also learn how to give constructive feedback, document performance properly, support employee growth, and use evaluations as a leadership tool that builds accountability and trust.

This is the last week in Building Safety Month, and this is something many of us Code Enforcement Officers deal with consistently: changing the use of a garage to a living space.

Unpermitted garage conversions can create serious safety concerns when they are done without proper review. Garages are often not originally built for living space, so issues can come up with electrical wiring, ventilation, insulation, emergency exits, fire separation, plumbing, and structural changes. Without permits, there may be no inspection to make sure the work is safe for the people using the space.

In many places, garage conversions or similar improvements may be allowed, but they usually need proper permits, approved plans, and required upgrades to meet building and safety standards. Always check with your local city before starting work.

Thank you to City of San Antonio Code Enforcement Officer Anna Rodriguez and Officer Richard for sharing this important information.
