Last Friday, the DPS student’s participated in one of our favorite service days working with 🤝♥️ Students are paired up with someone in need to assist them in choosing clothing, shoes, hats, etc. This service opportunity is always an impactful day for our students and everyone involved!

A Quest at Discovery Prep School is an eight-week hands-on, project where students pursue a passion of their own choosing. 🎯 They explore a topic they care about, ask real questions, and spend weeks researching, creating, and reflecting. Along the way, they build curiosity, persistence, confidence, and the courage to share their ideas. Our students traveled to Baja, Mexico for our annual service trip and showed up with full hearts and working hands ❤️🌎 There, at one of Baja Love’s partnered orphanages, our students repainted their classroom, hauled a large trash pile to the local dump, and shopped for requested essential food items and cleaning supplies. The work mattered, but so did the time in between getting to connect with the children there.

There were soccer games together and lots of trampoline laughs—little experiences that have a big impact! These trips grow empathy, responsibility, and perspective in ways that last far beyond a week. We’re incredibly proud of our students for choosing service over comfort and giving their energy to something bigger than themselves. 🫶🏼

✨The Magic of the Camera Obscura 😲🙌

Our photography students built a large-scale Camera Obscura using a table and blocks blacked out with fabric and paper. They experimented with different aperture sizes to observe how light bends and transforms the outside world into an upside down image inside. 🤯 The camera was large enough for students to crawl in and experience one of the earliest foundations of photography, where light, space, and time work together to create an image. Sometimes, understanding photography means slowing down and learning how it all began. ✨

Cyanotype isn’t just a technique, it’s a method still inspiring artists today, from the classroom to professional studios. ✨

We were thrilled to welcome Peter Tiner, a retired teacher, artist, and lifelong creator, who was the photography teacher and mentor to Discovery Prep’s photography teacher, Celena when she was in high school. He shared his own stunning Cyanotype work with our students and spoke about the importance of art and being a creator, reminding us that in a world where everyone can take photos on their phones, what truly defines photography is thoughtful design and intention. 📷
