Why do some kids experience a major summer slide… while others don’t?

It’s often connected to the hidden learning skills underneath academics.

Some children have stronger:
• retention
• retrieval
• long-term storage
• focus and learning stamina
• and automaticity with foundational skills

So even after a long break,
their learning pathways stay more active and accessible.

Other children may still need:
• repetition
• continued exposure
• and consistent practice
for learning to fully stick long-term.

That’s why some students lose reading fluency, math facts, confidence, or learning routines much more quickly over summer breaks.

And it’s important to understand: a summer slide is not always about intelligence or effort.

Sometimes it simply means a child’s learning foundations still need strengthening and reinforcement over time.

That’s why summer support should never look exactly the same for every child, different students have individual needs ☀️😎

If your child struggles with processing, try this ⬇️

1. Break learning into smaller parts
Too much information at once can feel overwhelming.

2. Slow down the explanation
Some children need more time to take in and organize information.

3. Show it, don’t just say it
Many learners understand better with visuals or modeling.

4. Revisit the concept again soon
Understanding often deepens with repeated exposure.

5. Give processing time before expecting an answer
Some children know more than they can explain quickly.

Processing weaknesses are not always about intelligence or effort.

Sometimes the brain simply needs more support making sense of the information 🧠
