Most leaders don't wake up one morning and decide to compromise an important principle.

It usually happens much more gradually.

An exception gets made because the circumstances seem unusual.

A difficult conversation gets postponed because the timing isn't right.

A behavior gets overlooked because addressing it would create conflict.

A standard that once seemed clear becomes a little more flexible because enforcing it carries a cost.

And every one of those decisions can seem perfectly reasonable at the time.

That's what makes them worth examining.

Over time, small exceptions can become accepted practices. What was once uncomfortable becomes familiar. What once required justification eventually requires very little explanation at all.

The boundary moved—but we may not have noticed it moving.

I call this Decision Drift™.

Decision Drift doesn't necessarily begin with a bad decision. Sometimes it begins with a reasonable decision that quietly changes what we're willing to accept the next time.

That's why leadership integrity isn't protected only in the big moments.

It's protected in the ordinary ones.

The conversation we decide to have.

The standard we choose to uphold.

The exception we decide not to normalize.

The moment we recognize that “just this once” may be moving us farther from where we intended to stand.
