Congratulations to Sadie Brachfeld, the winner of the 2026 AEC Photo Contest with this image of a juvenile raccoon!

Thanks to all of the photograph contributors: Arwen Jones, Alex Cassu, Tyler Bork, Sean Van Riper and others. Enjoy a few of their submissions from summer field work - and head out to the Adirondacks to enjoy the view.

Photo taken with zoom lens; please keep a respectful distance from all wildlife.

Fish on! The American Fisheries Society student chapter from SUNY ESF had a banner weekend trip to the Newcomb Campus.

Native species caught included brook trout, red belly dace, redbreast sunfish, white sucker, common shiner, cutlips minnow, creek chub, pumpkinseed and brown bullhead. Data on species richness, fish size and water chemistry help scientists assess changes to the fishery and watershed over the past century.

Afterward, the crew enjoyed oysters fresh from Long Island at the cabins on Arbutus Lake. It was a perfect Adirondack autumn weekend on the water!

Fish were handled and released by trained individuals under proper protocols.

🍂 🍁 The leaves are peak color right now 🍁 🍂 Enjoy a hike up ESF's Goodnow Mountain and you're halfway done with the Fire Tower Challenge!
In addition to 360-degree stunning views, the fire tower also aids research by hosting environmental sensors. Admire the scenery and appreciate SUNY ESF Newcomb Campus science every day of the year.

How do we engage, see and know our environment? What is novel, what is notable?

ESF's Dr. Marianne Patinelli-Dubay explores Huntington Wildlife Forest's Field Notes, ecological records from nearly a century ago when the Newcomb Campus transferred to the State College of Forestry (ESF) and little was known about the landscape.

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 - at the Whallonsburg Grange, 7:00 pm

You know monarchs migrate, but did you know you can help track their journey?

The Project Monarch app can detect nearby tagged individuals via your phone. Bluetooth transmitters can detect tagged monarchs up to 100 meters away.

Recently, a male monarch tagged in New Hampshire flew across ESF Newcomb Campus on its way to Ohio and points southwest! Dan Jenkins brought this migratory magic to our attention.

Research on migratory pathways may help with conservation of monarchs and other species across the continent. Cape May Point Arts and Science Center leads the tracking program: https://capemaypointartsandsciencecenter.org/project-monarch.
