Choose the right difficult.
Out on this hike, I’m sweating and pushing uphill.
It’s tough, but the payoff at the top makes every step worth it.

Parenting a stuck young adult works the same way.
Keeping things as they are is hard. Doing the work to guide them toward true independence is also hard. The difference? One leads nowhere, while the other changes their life forever.

Make sure you’re choosing the difficult that actually pays off.

If you’re ready to guide your young adult toward independence and want a proven path to get there, hit the link in my bio to book a free discovery session.

Is your young adult stalled struggling to launch and still leaning on you instead of standing on their own? The fastest way to create real change isn’t trying to force them to transform, it’s shifting the conditions around them.

The family system is often the fastest lever available, but it’s the one almost no one pulls first.

Ready to stop guessing and see your family’s patterns clearly?

What are the standards in your family? 🎯

When you set your targets high, you’re not always going to hit them on the first try and that’s okay! Setting high standards isn’t about instant perfection; it’s about aiming above average, showing up consistently, and putting in the effort even when you miss the mark.

Raise the bar, aim high, and keep aiming for the stars in your household! 🌟

Want to help your family reach those higher standards with practical tools? I built a free workbook for this. It guides you step-by-step through the Family Audit, the foundational first step I use with every family I coach so you can bridge the gap between average and your family’s highest potential. 🚀

Your son is 24. He’s smart, capable, likeable. And he’s still not launched.

You’ve read the articles. Talked to friends who don’t quite understand. Wondered if it’s a phase, a diagnosis, or something you did.

After 24 years of doing this work, here’s what I’ve learned:

The young adult is rarely the whole problem.

More often, it’s the family system around him, the boundaries that softened, the accommodations that became permanent, and the rescuing that slowly became a pattern.

That’s why I created a free Parenting Workbook for exactly this moment.

Inside is the Family Audit; the same first step I use with the families I work with. It helps you take an honest look at what may be keeping your son or daughter stuck, and identify what your family can start doing differently this week.

You don’t have to keep guessing.
You don’t have to keep rescuing.
And you don’t have to figure it all out alone.

Stop shielding your kids from feeling uncomfortable.

When supporting a young adult in recovery, our natural instinct as parents is to shield them from uncomfortable emotions. We don’t want them to feel nervous, scared, or overwhelmed. But trying to numb or avoid those hard feelings is often what leads to substance use in the first place.

Allowing them to fully experience their emotions, the good, the scary, and the exciting is a critical step on the pathway to long-term recovery.

What actually happens when parents change the dynamic?

When a young adult is stuck or resistant to independence, parents often wonder: “What happens if I change my approach?”

Real change doesn’t happen overnight, but it often follows a pattern.

This isn’t about control. It’s about creating the conditions where independence becomes possible and achievable.

It comes from a good place, but over-functioning for your young adult only holds them back.

When you act as their bank, excuse maker, and alarm clock, they miss out on developing essential life skills, resilience, and accountability.
