We’re proud to announce Access: Supports for Living’s new initiative, the Access: Center of Excellence (A:CE) as a 2026 Hudson Valley Action Award recipient at Pattern Live on November 4!

A:CE brings together human services providers, community partners, educators, researchers, and people with lived experience to strengthen services for people with mental health and substance use needs, developmental disabilities, and other complex challenges.

Through five institutes focused on integrated care, leadership and clinical excellence, technology and innovation, independence and healthy living, and su***de prevention, A:CE strengthens the workforce and helps develop and share approaches that improve people’s lives.

As a resource for the entire community, A:CE demonstrates how collaboration can improve services and systems across the Hudson Valley.

Please share this update with Hudson Valley neighbors who receive unemployment benefits or may need to file a claim.

New York State is upgrading its unemployment insurance system starting Monday, November 2, at 5 p.m. The work is expected to take 9 to 12 days. During that time, unemployment insurance services will be unavailable online and by phone, and payments will be delayed. Career Centers will still offer virtual job search help by appointment.

When households are already managing high housing and living costs, a delay in income matters. Pattern is sharing this notice so people and community organizations can prepare and help get the word out.

During the upgrade, all online and phone services for unemployment insurance will be unavailable, and unemployment payments will be delayed.

Can working households afford to live in the Hudson Valley?

Pattern’s new Out of Reach 2026 report shows that the gap between regional wages and housing costs remains firmly entrenched.

In all nine counties we serve, the average renter wage is below the wage needed to afford a modest one-bedroom apartment. In Putnam and Rockland counties, an average-wage renter would need to work 130 hours or more each week to afford that home. Homeownership is also beyond reach for many middle-income families across the region.

Pattern developed this analysis using the National Low Income Housing Coalition’s annual Out of Reach data, along with regional housing, wage, and home-sales information.

The consequences extend beyond household budgets. When the people who sustain our economy cannot afford to live in the communities where they work, the effects are felt by employers, public institutions, families, and neighborhoods throughout the Hudson Valley.

The data provide a shared foundation for regional collaboration and practical action.

Housing is one of the defining challenges and opportunities facing the Hudson Valley.

Our President & CEO, Alexandra Obremski, recently joined News 12 to discuss the role of housing developments like Tuxedo Reserve in addressing the region's housing shortage. As highlighted in the interview, while affordability remains a critical concern, increasing the overall housing supply is an essential part of creating healthier, more competitive communities.

At Pattern for Progress, we believe that thoughtful, data-driven conversations are essential as communities grapple with growth, economic competitiveness, infrastructure, and quality of life. There are no simple solutions, but there is a clear need for objective research and regional collaboration.

Thanks to the Chronogram for writing about one of our latest reports, “Built for Cars, Ready for People.” The Hudson Valley has many overbuilt, underutilized parking lots that could be reused for community development and economic development. Modern zoning, planning, and community collaboration are key to the effective re-use of these dormant swaths of pavement. More below:
