I found this keyboard fidget set on Amazon—and immediately saw a multisensory reading tool. 👀

For the word **clap**, the student presses one key for each sound:

/k/ • /l/ • /ă/ • /p/

That is **four clicks for four sounds**.

Then we sweep across the keys, blend the sounds together, and read the whole word: **clap**.

This simple activity helps make an invisible skill—the sounds inside a word—visible and concrete.

But the fidget itself isn’t the instruction. The learning comes from intentionally pairing each click with one spoken sound and then blending those sounds into the word.

**Tap it. Blend it. Read it.**

“Sound it out” isn’t bad advice—but for a child who is already stuck, it often isn’t enough.

If your child knew how to break apart and blend the word independently, they probably would have done it already.

Instead of repeating, “Sound it out,” try giving your child a specific strategy:

👉 “Let’s look at each sound.”

👉 “Tap the sounds, then blend them together.”

👉 “What sound does this spelling pattern represent?”

The prompt should match the reason your child is struggling. They may not be hearing every sound, connecting sounds to letters, blending smoothly, or recognizing the spelling pattern.

This is why effective reading instruction is diagnostic and prescriptive. A trained teacher doesn’t just hear a wrong word—we listen closely to determine why the error happened and what needs to be taught next.

We don’t want children to depend on adults for the answer. We want to teach them how to repair the word so they have a strategy the next time they get stuck. ❤️

When reading homework becomes a battle, it can look like a motivation problem.

Avoiding. Guessing. Complaining. Shutting down.

But behavior often communicates something deeper:

**“This feels too hard.”**

Your child may not need more reminders to focus or try harder. They may be missing a specific reading skill—or they may need that skill taught differently.

A struggling reader might have difficulty:

👂 Hearing every sound in a word
🔤 Connecting sounds to letters
🔗 Blending the sounds together
🧩 Recognizing the spelling pattern

When we identify exactly where the breakdown is happening, we can provide instruction that targets the real problem—not simply the behavior we see on the surface.

Tomorrow, I’m sharing why repeatedly telling a struggling reader to **“sound it out”** may not give them the help they need—and what to say instead.

“Read in order to live.” 📖❤️

Such a simple fortune, but one that really made me stop and think.

Reading gives us so much more than knowledge. It allows us to experience places we may never visit, understand people and perspectives different from our own, imagine new possibilities, and sometimes even see ourselves a little differently.

As a reading specialist who has spent much of my life helping children discover the power of reading and words, this fortune felt especially fitting.

Sometimes a fortune cookie gets it exactly right. ❤️

What does “Read in order to live” mean to you?

Before children can spell a word, they must be able to hear and separate each sound in it. This skill is called phoneme segmentation.

Here is an easy multisensory activity to try at home:

🟣 Draw a row of boxes.
🟡 Make one small ball of playdough for each sound.
🔵 Say the word slowly.
👆 Press one ball into a box as you say each sound.
✏️ Name the letter that represents each sound, and then write the word.

For the word “net,” your child would segment:

/n/ /e/ /t/ — three sounds, three boxes.

Start with simple three-sound words such as **map, sit, log, sun** and **web**. Remember, the boxes represent sounds—not necessarily the number of letters in a word.

This is exactly why I believe quality training matters so much. Students deserve instruction from educators who not only understand the principles of structured literacy, but have had the opportunity to practice, receive feedback, and develop the skill to apply them effectively.

Taking an Orton-Gillingham Academy course without completing the practicum and mentorship is like passing the written driver's test without ever getting behind the wheel. The coursework provides the knowledge. The practicum develops the skill.

It's through guided teaching, observation, feedback, and reflection that theory becomes effective instruction. Learning to make diagnostic and prescriptive decisions in real time is what transforms knowledge into expertise.

Knowledge is essential, but expert performance requires guided practice with feedback.

Dyslexia does not go away, but with the right instruction, students with dyslexia can become strong, successful readers.

This student once struggled with reading. Through patient, individualized instruction that met her exactly where she was, she developed the skills and confidence to become one of the top readers in her class and later enter honors English classes in high school.

Progress like this does not happen overnight. It is built one skill, one success, and one confident step at a time. I am incredibly grateful to have been part of her journey. 💙
