Recently, I was asked by a district leader if there was any research to prove that someone who has completed a full certification with a supervised practicum is really more qualified than someone who has had a few days of training.

Think about it this way: Would you let a surgeon operate on your child because they attended a three-day workshop on the procedure? Or would you want the surgeon who practiced under supervision, was observed, received corrective feedback, and had to demonstrate mastery?

Of course there’s a difference.

Training is not certification. Exposure is not expertise.

And don’t mishear me. Certification doesn’t guarantee every interventionist will be amazing. But we have too many schools checking the box that says, “We’re providing intervention,” without asking whether the person providing it has actually demonstrated competence in delivering that intervention.

This matters tremendously for students with dyslexia who need intensive, specialized intervention.

Parents, I highly recommend asking your school what certification your child’s interventionist has received that qualifies them to deliver the intensive intervention your child needs to remediate their dyslexia.

And I’m not talking about a teaching or special education certificate. Ask about the specific dyslexia intervention they are delivering. Was there a supervised practicum? Observation? Corrective feedback? Demonstrated mastery?

We have to stop confusing exposure with expertise, training with certification, and checking a box with actually meeting a child’s needs.

Meet Mrs. DiGiacomo! 👋

Rebecca DiGiacomo is a special education teacher who tutors with us at Reading Results Tutoring. She uses the Orton-Gillingham approach to provide explicit, structured instruction that helps students understand the patterns behind reading and spelling.

In today’s video, Mrs. DiGiacomo explains how students can decide whether to use **c** or **k** at the beginning of a word:

🔹 Use **c** before **a, o,** or **u**: *cat, cot, cup*
🔹 Use **k** before **e, i,** or **y**: *Ken, kit, Kyle*

Reading may be in our name, but math is also an important part of what we do at Reading Results Tutoring.

These pictures show students working in the concrete stage of math instruction. During this stage, students use physical, tangible materials such as base-ten blocks, counters, fraction tiles, or everyday objects to model quantities and explore mathematical relationships.

Using manipulatives alone does not guarantee that a student understands the concept. The materials must be selected and used intentionally. Students need explicit instruction that connects what they are doing with their hands to the mathematical idea being taught.

In these activities, students are using concrete materials to build their understanding of place value and number relationships.

After students develop understanding with physical objects, instruction can progress to the representational stage, where students draw pictures or visual models. Eventually, they connect those representations to numbers and mathematical symbols.

The manipulatives are the tools. Mathematical understanding is the goal.
