🔬🌳 Science in the WILD 🌳🔬

Ms. Joiner’s 6th grade science class took a field trip…to our front yard! Students measured the temperature of the soil, measured time with a sun dial, and even looked at how the trees breathe!

Any opportunity our students get to go outside is fun - especially when it involves learning 🤓

📣 As we gear up for the 2026-27 school year, please help us welcome our new faculty! 📣

Last but not least, we have Mrs. Darby Samargo!

Darby is proud to call South Carolina home after growing up in Charlotte, North Carolina and attending North Carolina State University's School of Design - and now living with her husband, two boys and coonhound for over 6 years in Prosperity. They stay busy playing on the water and hiking in the woods, exploring National Parks and hearing live music. Her family is big on soccer and travel, country roads and ice cream - and they are often found lined up in bright singlets for
local 5 and 10k runs.

Darby has a background in Architectural Design as well as Art & Design, and she has a small business in downtown Newberry both consulting in exterior color and selling arts and crafts supplies. Darby is committed to bringing as much art and color to the community as possible and has been involved in park-beautification projects, gallery exhibitions at The Opera House and art camps hosted at her studio and also at the Academy. It is that drive and spirit that brings her here to the classroom, with the hopes of inspiring our kids to be curious creatives who have the resources and support they need to succeed. Her Integration Studio builds off of the middle school core classes and allows for a space to question, express, collaborate and think critically.

This week, Heidi Cole, Director of Kindergarten, and Jaymi Wilbanks, Assistant Head of School, 5th Grade & 7th Grade Teacher, are attending the Innovative School Summit in Nashville! 🤓✨

This conference brings together educators from across the country to learn new, evidence-based strategies, innovative classroom practices, and leadership ideas that support student success and a positive school culture. 🙌

Next we have Miss Lane!

Miss Lane is a Newberry Native who loves seeing our community thrive! Her love for learning began in our local schools, which includes Newberry Academy. She received her BFA in Interior Design from Savannah College of Art and Design; Master’s Certificate in Waldorf Early Childhood Education from LifeWays North America; and is a current doctoral candidate for Sacred, Natural, and Bioenergetic Medicine degrees at IBEM, a First Nations seminary. She is a certified auriculotherapist, biofeedback practitioner, and aromatherapist.

In addition to teaching all ages in various fields for 18 years, she has developed curricula for both academic and performing arts programs. Inviting cross-collaboration and project-based learning are Miss Lane’s favorite ways to engage students. She is committed to nurturing the whole child through intentional, developmentally-appropriate education. It is her strongest belief that children already embody what tomorrow’s world needs, and each child is a genius in their own right. What an honor it is to be chosen by the Holy Spirit to be placed on a child’s Divine Path!

In her spare time, Miss Lane can be found writing, drawing, and chasing her wildest dreams on stages and screens. She also deeply loves ballet, entrepreneurship, chess, and trying her hand at growing fruit. Miss Lane shares a wonderful life with her husband, two children, and too many creatures to list in their historic home. She is looking forward to a great school year with her middle school math and science students!

Brandy Watson is thrilled to join the Newberry Academy team serving as the Education Support Director. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Newberry College, has been involved in the education profession in various roles, and is currently obtaining her Neurodiversity Coach Certification.

Brandy is excited to work with the staff, students, and families to provide academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support to help students reach their full potential. "I believe that every child can thrive and that success embodies so much more than just the academic side of a student's education".

Brandy is married to her high school sweetheart, has a daughter and son, and two doodles. When not in school, she enjoys listening to music, crafting, and spending time with her family.
