Some flowers from the garden. We are growing 3 types of milkw**d for the butterflies: common, swamp and butterfly w**d. We may even get some grapes this year.

We're a little behind at the school garden this spring, just getting the tomatoes in. Added a piece of assistive equipment and really like the auger bit. Add water to the holes, plant your seedlings deeply and feed with well-composted manure on top, then mulch. Trying several new varieties with fun names, including "mortgage lifter" and "black krim".

Many of these natives and more can be purchased through the Conservation District Spring Tree Sale.

If you plant shrubs for winter interest, make sure it is a native shrub with berries that sustain your local wildlife. There are many types of Buckthorn or Viburnum. But what is native in your state can be a nuisance or even an invasive elsewhere. Non-native species often lack the specific nutrients that your local birds need.
