The battle to get your kid to read this summer has started…so here are some tips I’ve come up with to get your kid back into reading!
This was my go to list when I had parents talk to me in May about what they could do to help encourage reading for their child. Let me know what you think!
If you are looking for some books, head to my website to see my NYT, USA Today and PW bestsellers for kids and adults!

Pediatricians group finds kids of all ages need regular recess for physical and mental health
New evidence shows that kids need pauses between concentrated bouts of learning so the brain can hold and store the information. Researchers also say recess gives kids a chance to navigate relationships and build confidence, which is just as important for older kids as younger ones.

I had the absolute honor of speaking to Delaware’s General Assembly yesterday. It is empowering to share what I feel is true, to advocate for our children, educators, and the profession.
My message?
In Delaware, we keep hearing that we’re in a “literacy crisis”. As a special educator and reading specialist, I don’t believe this narrative. I believe we’re in a connection and emotional regulation crisis.
Kids want to learn and do well. Many of them can, and yet many of them are unavailable for learning due to unmet needs and unsolved problems.
My call?
We need to slow down and connect. Our students and teachers are overwhelmed and exhausted by the demands of the day. We need TIME and space to build connections with each other and to proactively and collaboratively problem solve. When we effectively connect with students and meet them where they are… when we nurture teachers… learning follows.

“This is the ‘Lombardy Corner,’” a parent said as this month’s City Walk began in the Northeast part of Wilmington. Current Lombardy Tigers emerged on bikes to hug their teachers, principal McDermott, and even Dagda, their furry friend from PAWS for People! A middle schooler came out to catch up on his scooter and a high schooler asked us to “wait a sec” so he could run inside and change into his high school automotive uniform. This is why we walk.
Safe United Neighborhoods (S.U.N.) “is always on the move” and it’s such a joy to witness how the school, neighborhood, and other organizations come together for these small but mighty moments of connection. Thank you, Pastor Sandra Ben and all who join each month. Kudos to Mrs. Greco and the Lombardy Equity Team for facilitating the special ritual with school staff (past and present!).☀️💙💛🐯🦮🦮🐾
