University of Delaware Community Music School CMS connects UD Music Majors & Faculty with the local community through enriching music experiences. We also offer many summer camps and specialized workshops.

The University of Delaware Community Music School (UDCMS) is the outreach program of the University of Delaware Department of Music. For nearly 20 years the ​UDCMS has provided a wide variety of music instruction options for more than 500 students a year. Our current programs include private study instruction with a wide-range of instructors from students in the Department of Music to professional performers with extensive experience. In addition, we have a vibrant Suzuki program and three youth choirs ranging from first grade through high school. Children under 6 are happy participants and eager learners in our Music for Young Minds classes.

Hey, High School Musicians…you have a voice to share and we want to hear it! Join the Hentatonix a Capella group where you’ll not only gain improved ear training and vocal skills, but you’ll have agency in what songs are sung and how to arrange the vibe for each piece. In rehearsals, you’ll work side-by-side with UD Music Majors who will guide you and share their expertise as university a Capella singer. At the concert, the stage is yours as you sing a solo, beat-box, and perform harmonies along with fellow Blue Hen(tatonix)s!

New students are welcome - no prior a Capella experience is needed!

Learning through children’s instinctive manners, (play!), is at the core of our Sweet Beats music and movement class. Our Lead Teacher, Miss Amanda Fitts-Rash, is a veteran music educator with all 3 levels of Orff-Schulwerk Music Certification. Miss Amanda, a full-time public school music educator, leads our students and college Assistant Teachers in singing, playing instruments, moving, and creating music through speech, poetry, and imaginative play. Whether going to music class is your child’s favorite part of their elementary school day, or your child simply loves exploring multiple ways to make music, this class is for them! Come build strong minds and strong hearts with us!

Today’s activities become childhood memories! So choose activities, like the CMS Broadway Kids and Broadway Jr. classes, that will leave your kids smiling each week and when they think back to it years from now!

Our musical theatre classes provide experiences in acting, singing, and dancing, as the students create mini theatre performances. With an average 1:4 teacher:student ratio, the budding artists receive personalized guidance and encouragement. The spotlights shine across them all as they work together to perform standard musical theatre repertoire while also being encouraged to compose their own original scripts or song lyrics. And because we focus on COMMUNITY at the Community Music School, throughout the semester, the musical theatre classes combine for Broadway Besties, a mentorship program between the older, Broadway Jr. students, and the younger, Broadway Kids performers. The Broadway Jr students become the leaders as they write, block, and direct the younger participants in a combined performance at the culminating Showcase concert!

Just us over here at UD CMS feeling GRATEFUL for udschoolofmusic students, MICAH MCCREADY, CMS Camp Coordinator, and ALONDRA GONZALEZ, Before & After Care Coordinator, for their HARD WORK, DEDICATION, & PROFESSIONALISM! They were the first ones here each day and the last to leave, putting in long hours while always having a SMILE on their faces, and keeping us LAUGHING with their FUN-LOVING antics and sense of HUMOR! They are KIND, MINDFUL of others, EASY GOING, and have helped make camp a place where 200+ YOUNG MUSICIANS CREATED & FLOURISHED!

Sending all the CMS love their way!

Throughout the first two weeks of camp, our Backstage campers measure, cut, drill, assemble, and paint A LOT of sets and props! By the third week, they transition into stage crew for tech rehearsals and shows. Like Mary Poppins, their work is practically perfect in every way!
