Northeast Extension Risk Management Education Center

Northeast Extension Risk Management Education Center Extension Risk Management Education's Northeast Center was established in 2001 and is located at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware.

The Center, in conjunction with the other three regional centers, conducts the Extension Risk Management Education Competitive Grants Program. This program involves an annual competitive process, and provides funding to both public and private organizations for educational projects designed to improve the ability of agricultural producers to effectively manage the risks associated with their farming businesses. A key feature of this program is that it is “results-based” – awards are made to projects that clearly identify risk management results for the participants. As investors, the Risk Management Education Centers are not funding project team activities, but rather a change in risk management behavior for a group of participating producers

Ahlishia wraps up the Risk Management Across America series with Pauline Van Nurden and Curtis Mahnken of the University of Minnesota’s Center For Farm Financial Management. Together, they take listeners behind the scenes of the Digital Extension Risk Management Education Center and its role in connecting resources, knowledge, and educators across the national ERME network.

Pauline and Curtis highlight the Ag Risk & Farm Management Library, where producers and agricultural professionals can find trusted resources, tools, budgets, and educational materials covering the five areas of agricultural risk. The conversation offers a practical look at how the Digital Center helps make credible, research-based risk management information easier to find and use.

Farmer Peer-to-Peer Programs: This program is geared toward Extension educators, agency personnel and other agricultural service providers who want to initiate or enhance peer to peer outreach for those in farming, fishing, and forestry industries.
This 2-part webinar series will provide an overview of several peer-to-peer initiatives and help to answer the why, what, how, and funding questions to help you begin the process to start or expand peer-to-peer program.

Peer-to-peer mental health programs are highly effective for farmers because they bypass the stigma of traditional therapy and are rooted in shared lived experience. Farmers typically prefer advice from trusted peers who understand the realities of agricultural life.

Last week at the 2026 Extension Risk Management Education National Conference in Salt Lake City, we had the opportunity to recognize our outstanding project award winner from the Northeast region.

The 2026 Outstanding Project Award was presented by our center Director Laurie Wolinski to Jennifer Hashley and her project team at New Entry Sustainable Farming Project at Tufts University. The project entitled "Overcoming Risk During Climate Variability: The Importance of Recordkeeping in Small Scale Farming" focused on providing aid to new producers in order to develop a culture of recordkeeping, build financial analysis skills to assess overall economic viability and financial health of their farm business, and increase participation in federal farm programs.

Producer outcomes included: improved production data collection practices and management decisions; market channel assessments; improved farm financial recordkeeping and enterprise analysis; and increased understanding of overall business health in the face of weather-related risks.

Congratulations!
